That is an outrageous and defenseless stastitic. If a woman does not insure protection and is sexually active. . .then the ensuiring pregnancy cannot be considered 'unplanned' or a 'surprise'.

'Planned parenthood' education seems to be precisely that albeit truly a 'misnomer'. . .and they appear to be winning the amoral educational battleground.

Even casting 'morality' aside here. . .the wisdom of an ounce of prevention vs a 'pound of cure'. . .surely holds. . .

Spontaneous abortions are not murder. Spontaneous abortion is the medical term for miscarriage. So, those 11,700 were children that the mother was planning for when she had a miscarriage.

And it also said that that 2% figure is a 20% increase over the previous year.

That means that it was 1.66% and now it is 2%, an increase of about a third of a percent. Hardly a meaningful increase from an analytical point of view, perhaps not even statistically significant.

That is the kind of statistic that people report who have nothing else to rely on, much like "cutting the rate of growth in revenues."

It is doubtful many women travel all the way from a red state to NYC for an abortion. More likely is women from surrounding suburbs and exurbs, and from neighboring states like Connecticut, who seek anonymity in the big city.
