Amid the chaos and confusion that engulfed New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina struck, a congressman used National Guard troops to check on his property and rescue his personal belongings — even while New Orleans residents were trying to get rescued from rooftops, ABC News has learned.

On Sept. 2 — five days after Katrina hit the Gulf Coast — Rep. William Jefferson, D-La., who represents New Orleans and is a senior member of the powerful Ways and Means Committee, was allowed through the military blockades set up around the city to reach the Superdome, where thousands of evacuees had been taken.

With a top aide of Jefferson pleading guilty to multi-charges this week, and Congressman Jefferson saying "he just doesn't understand why", I thought it would be good background to remind us just who New Orleans' Congress critter Jefferson really is.

Jefferson says he is perplexed by plea
Ex-aide implicates him in bribery case
Saturday, January 14, 2006
By Bruce Alpert
Staff writer
Rep. William Jefferson said Friday that he has never demanded or accepted "anything on behalf of myself, any member of my family or any third party" and is "disappointed and in some ways perplexed" by a former aide's guilty plea this week that implicates him in a federal bribery case.

As part of a plea agreement, Brett Pfeffer, 37, admitted Wednesday to bribing a congressman in exchange for help in brokering deals in Nigeria and Ghana for a small U.S. telecommunications company. The congressman was identified only as "Representative A," but court documents said that Pfeffer worked for Representative A in the 1990s, the same years that Pfeffer was a legislative aide in Jefferson's office. Jefferson also has traveled in the past two years to Nigeria and Ghana on economic development missions.

William Jefferson, congressman and member of the Congressional Black Caucus is just like Kathleen Blanco, the lowest Democrat scum to occupy the universe. The voters of Louisiana should be ashamed of themselves!!!

Why is this being reported now? It was thoroughly reported at the time it actually happened...

What ever he had in that computer, suitcases and box must have been important enough to him not to accept the helicopter rescue. He wasn't going to let these items get away from him.

Rush had a long piece on this months ago - before he was indicted and therefore politically "safe" to attack by the MSM.

The water reached to the third step of Jefferson's house, a military source familiar with the incident told ABC News, and the vehicle pulled up onto Jefferson's front lawn so he wouldn't have to walk in the water. Jefferson went into the house alone, the source says, while the soldiers waited on the porch for about an hour.

Did they hear the sound of a paper shredder while they were hanging around on the porch?

---Thats what I was thinking. I wonder what was in the box and on that laptop that was so important? And like you said, after an hour in there he probably destroyed some incriminating s**t. (I sound like a good spy novel, ha?)
LOL
