“Vast majority of U.S. troops forced to leave Iraq” (Murtha gets his mug in Aljazeera)

John Murtha, the top Democrat of the House defense appropriations subcommittee predicts that "the vast majority" of U.S. troops deployed in IRAQ will be forced to leave the country by year's end, or maybe sooner.

"I think the vast majority will be out by the end of the year and I'm hopeful it will be sooner than that," Murtha, the veteran U.S. congressman who urged the BUSH administration in November to set a withdrawal plan for the occupying forces in IRAQ, told the CBS "60 Minutes" show, according to excerpts of the interview released by the network.

Murtha further predicted that the U.S. President would be forced to accept an Iraq pullout plan as inaction will lead to the Republicans lose control of Congress in the November midterm elections.

"You're going to see a plan for withdrawal," he insisted.

Murtha believes the Congress will pass a plan calling for pullout of U.S. troops from IRAQ because of rising voter dissatisfaction with the deteriorating situation in the war-torn country.

"I think the political people who give advice will say to him, 'You don't want a Democratic Congress. You want to keep a Republican majority, and the only way you're going to keep it is by reducing substantially the troops in Iraq,'" Murtha said.

Last November, the first veteran of the Vietnam War elected to Congress, sparked controversy by demanding the U.S government to withdraw all American forces in IRAQ in six months, insisting the war was grounded in "a flawed policy wrapped in illusion."

At first the BUSH administration strongly rejected the congressman's demand and criticized it saying that it was tantamount to "surrender". But later it toned down its criticism, saying that the U.S. PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH just had an honest policy disagreement with him.

I think its called "projection" by psychiatrists (but what do I know).
He feels dissatisfaction and projects it onto the "voters."
He feels problems with his morale, and attributes it to the troops.
As he searches for his legacy, he wants to be the prescient one; since he knows we will probably be drawing down troop strength throughout the year, he "predicts" it.
Its sickening what Washington does to people.

What it takes to bring down a nation is a fool getting his country involved in military situation his country cannot win (for example, Hitler's attempt to occupy the Soviet Union)

So Hitler would still be around and unimpeded if he had stopped at say, Poland or France?

Murtha loves his country, and is not a traitor

Not all of us believe he is a traitor, just misguided or legacy hunting (or simply deranged).

It was easy enough for the US to defeat the Iraqi armed forces, but occupying a country where everyone hates you is much more difficult

I don't know if they all hate us now, but pulling out prematurely, i.e. before their democracy has taken firm root, will definitely make then hate us.

Oh, and welcome to Free Republic. See you again never.

I wish this country would consider going back to charging scum like this with treason.

It ain't going to happen.

Since Jane Fonda and John Kerry were not charged with treason the prescience was set.

I suspect they already know what they've got and that's exactly what they want...

Maybe, but I think it would be money well spent to publicize this piece of dirt's comments to a wider audience. If it will not hurt him with his constituency, then his words should be quoted to challenge every democRAT in more conservative districts. Make the DemocRATs take public positions to either support him or distance themselves from him.
