FOR THE second year in a row...the population of Massachusetts has shrunk.
It was one of only three states to end the year with fewer people than it had at the start -- New York and Rhode Island were the others -- and the only one to do so for the second year running.

Yes it is pretty. The Berkshires were to my west, but we had Northampton-Amherst to the North which is "Moscow on the Connecticut".
I am not sure seceding would work, unless they let it merge with parts of New York State which are also "Red".
The illegal population is growing more than the American population is leaving Mass.
The US Census Bureau numbers are refering to America citizens and tax payers.

I hope the people moving are like you. Here in Arizona, the rich Californians are moving here to build their mansions in the forests and vote liberal. Between them and the illegals, we now have a governor of dubious sexuality and radical politics who the media calls a "moderate." We also have McCain.
Californians never learn. They Bolshevized their state and now look for other victims.

I grew up in Arkansas and that's part of the reason I'm moving out of Mass. Not only is it cheaper pretty much anywhere else, but the closer you get to the city (Boston) the ruder people are. I'm on the New Hampshire border, in a small town, and it's not too different in attitude than where I grew up. The small towns outside of Boston (and Cambridge and Brookline etc) try to vote some sense into the rest of the state, but the liberal population centers out vote us. In the town I live in, there were way more Bush/Cheney signs than Kerry/Edwards in the last election. However, there are some folks in this thread who feel we don't have to right to move outside of the state ...
Red areas of NJ are now being invaded by blue people from uninhabitable parts of NY.
They bring their liberal mindset with them and the end result is demonrats being elected and RAISING our taxes to meet the demands of the former NYers.
New Hampshire is full of people who fled MA and brought their 'demands' with them.
Generalizations are just that.....there are always exceptions.

And there's always the abortion factor. Libs get abortions for their own convenience, eliminating children they might indoctrinate into liberalism. When the children of persons who do not abort babies escape the leftist public school systems, liberalism begins to die (please see Europe).
I truly believe that most of the people who ARE leaving the state (and my wife and I know several) are conservative. The politics of the state are a major part of the reason we (and they) are leaving. At least our state legislature recently had some restraint and voted down giving illegal immigrants in-state college tuition at the state colleges.

Sorry to offend. Not intended. (I am a California native, and resident. As such I have to have a fairly thick skin).
Words like "refugee" or "migrant" are pretty mainstream, when talking about interstate relocation.
I think the people who are leaving the state are young families with children, people who can't afford homes in this state, and that is a conservative constituency.
It's been pointed out time and again that Massachusetts transplants to New Hampshire are more reliably Republican than native New Hampshirites, many of whom have shifted their voting habits, but it seems like N.H. people still look to us to blame for their state's turning a little more purple.
You can rent in the Boston area for very reasonable prices relative to salaries, but yeah, the costs of owning a home are in the stratosphere. Those amenities (and they are wonderful) are enough to keep 20-somethings and empty nesters in the state, but people without a lot of money who are concerned about having a home for their kids are trading in the big city glamor for a place they can afford to settle down. Boston isn't so exciting if you have to settle 40 miles away to buy a home.
Taxes in Massachusetts, as a share of income, are relatively low--lower than in Georgia or North Carolina, for example. We've had many years of Republican governors and between tax cuts and our high incomes we do not pay much in taxes. I think we're ranked like #29 among states for state and local taxes.
Throw in our federal tax burden, where our high salaries and the progressive tax system means that we subsidize a lot of poorer states, and we rise to #4.
