FOR THE second year in a row...the population of Massachusetts has shrunk.
It was one of only three states to end the year with fewer people than it had at the start -- New York and Rhode Island were the others -- and the only one to do so for the second year running.

Understood ... thanks. My wife and I are moving for a variety of reasons. The politics of the state is part of it. The economy of the state is another part. Weather is another. I guess I think of people who have no where else to go and nothing to offer once they get somewhere else when I think of refugee. My wife and I are both high-tech professionals (both working for a company you might recognize with 3 initials and called a big base color). We feel we're taking our votes and our taxes to another part of the country that might meet our lifestyle expectations.
Actually, my wife and I are almost 50 with no children. The other people we know who are moving are generally in our same general demographic situation. But, overall, you might be right. People are leaving for a variety of reasons, though.

This was less than a block from Harvard Square... and BTW, i lover Harvard Square - and in fact I love visiting Berkley - there is an energy and a freedom I really appreciate. But in the circles I was running in - high tech grad students and professors - the PC stresses were large.
The reason why many people who move from Mass to red states get a bad reputation is because many bring their liberal elitism with them. To be honest, there are even some conservatives who move down here and immediately start demanding the rebel flag be taken down, and that schools and buildings that are named after Civil War heroes be renamed. We all realize that not all people are like that, but there are alot of people who come down and continually talk about how racist the south is, and how great the northeast is.
Next comes the gardual change. They start making gun laws stricter, and gradually taking away personal freedoms. Pretty soon, communities throughout the South start looking like the hellholes they came from.
They had 16 congressional seats and 16 votes for president in the 1920's.
Now they have 10 seats and 10 votes.
Soon they will lose another one...maybe two in the next census
Sorry, every state gets two extra votes for president to represent their senators. MA has 12 votes for president, not 10.
I am trying my best to take my conservative butt and business down to Florida so I can make it a redder state!
NY is just too expensive.
So you claim there is a plan to infest other areas? Hardly, since moving is a large expense and the very thought of a plan such as this being set up and implemented by the left, in secret, is out of the question.
NY gave GWB more votes than most of the red states combined, don't forget it!
they don't count the illegals. I know for NY, I cannot see how the population downstate is doing anything but rising. the roads are more crowded, there is an endless stream of new retail stores being built - all of which are crowded. apartment buildings going up everywhere.

For census purposes, they DO count illegals. Some republicans in the house have presented a constitutional amendment to change this.
I've heard the two seats NY are going to lose are coming from upstate.
Many other states that people accuse of being liberal hell holes are in fact states full of freedom loving Americans who are outnumbered by city dwelling Liberal elitists, their illegal immigrant nannies, and their welfare-dependent ghettos filled with block voting minority "clients".
Leave San Francisco and go 100 miles East and your in the middle of the Sierra mountains. A lot of hardy, independent hard working conservatives live there.

The transfer tax is minimal in NY. The mortgage tax is what is disgusting! 1.25% to the state just to get a mortgage, 1.5 in Yonkers and 1.75 in the Bronx!

It's all about jobs, and housing.
The high paying, hi-tech job market has definitely slowed down.
The median price of a single family home is approaching $400K.I certainly don't blame anyone for seeking greener pastures. If i was younger, I'd probably bail out too.
One interesting point to ponder in my county(Barnstable); second home ownership has skyrocketed, keeping our local taxes down, while keeping the building industry very busy.

They come with alot of money, which buys alot of influence.
I understand that. That's the same criticism I had growing up in the South. But that's not true of everyone who are moving out. Comments were made by folks earlier that were somewhat offensive to those of us who are moving out of Mass.
