they do that in NY - the real estate transfer tax. sell your home, the government gets a piece of the action.

The transfer tax is minimal in NY. The mortgage tax is what is disgusting! 1.25% to the state just to get a mortgage, 1.5 in Yonkers and 1.75 in the Bronx!
