PRESIDENTIAL NEWS OF THE DAY: The President arrived back at the White House from Camp David this afternoon, as his wife and daughter arrived safely in Ghana on their first leg of a visit to Africa. Along with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, on Monday they will head the official delegation to the inauguration of Liberia's first woman president.

In Texas, the President's father, former President GHW Bush, was on hand to christen the USS San Antonio, the first in the Navy's new class of amphibious landing ships. The former president was the keynote speaker.

Navy Commissions USS San Antonio Former President George H.W. Bush delivered the keynote address as the U.S. Navy commissioned the USS San Antonio at Naval Station Ingleside.

The San Antonio is the lead ship in the Navy’s new LPD 17 class, which will eventually replace three classes of amphibious vessels that are aging.

The former president was among more than 6,000 people Sunday at Naval Station Ingleside today who watched the USS San Antonio go into service.

Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, was also on hand for the commissioning ceremony of the $1.7 billion warship.

The San Antonio is the first of the Navy's new class of amphibious landing ships.

It has a crew of 360 sailors and can haul up to 800 Marines and their equipment.

The San Antonio also has two surgical theaters, a 24-bed infirmary and other medical facilities.

The ship must now go through a few years of training before it's deployed in 2008.

QUOTE OF THE DAY:

During an interview with the press corps on her plane, the First Lady discussed several topics, including the following:

Laura Bush begins visit to West Africa

ACCRA, Ghana (AP) — First lady Laura Bush said Sunday that the U.S. government is right to eavesdrop on Americans with suspected ties to terrorists, and that President Bush worries that revelations about the domestic spying program will cripple efforts to foil terrorists.

"I think the American people expect the United States government and the president to do what they can to make sure there's not an attack by foreign terrorists," Mrs. Bush said just before landing here to begin a four-day stay in West Africa.

"I think he was worried that it would undermine our efforts by alerting terrorists to what our efforts are," she said.

The former president was in the news in a different way, as his personal chef has compiled a new cookbook of Bush family favorites.

Former President Bush's personal chef compiles The Bush Family Cookbook

PORTLAND, Me. (AP) - Former president George Bush's personal chef remembers the time that Barbara Bush conspired with him to try to slip a broccoli salad past his boss.

As president, Bush famously proclaimed his disdain for the cruciferous vegetable, declaring that he never liked it since his mother had made him eat it as a child.

So readers of Ariel De Guzman's The Bush Family Cookbook may be surprised to find a broccoli salad as one of the more than 200 favourite family recipes included in the collection.

The salad, which combines broccoli with red onions, golden raisins, crumbled bacon and toasted sunflower seeds in a dressing of mayonnaise and vinegar, was a hit with everyone but Bush, who picked up the bowl only to pass it around to others for second helpings, De Guzman recalled.

But he said the ex-president's feelings about broccoli do not reflect a dislike for fresh vegetables and he is particularly fond of spinach, asparagus and snow peas.

Beyond sharing recipes enjoyed by the Bushes and their guests, the book tells the inspiring story of a young man from a small town in the Philippines who joined the U.S. navy and worked his way up from stewardsman aboard destroyer tenders to become Bush's personal steward in the White House.
