But that was in effect a new district redrawn after the 1980 cenus. The Democrats thought they had a real chance and spent a ton of money trying to win. Oxley was all but unknown in Crawford and Richland counties. Oxley was out spent by significant amount.. but still won.
After working his new district and becoming well known, Oxley has had a series of easy victories.
I believe you're right. I also believe that the reason for that is the Ohio GOP has long been filled in the ranks by country club, RINO, "moderate" republicans who have effectively been running an exclusive club that prevents those not of their ilk to gain entrance. They seem to view real conservatives as too far out of the mainstream. Thus, a true conservative will have tremendous difficulty gaining name recognition via Ohio politics.
If those Ohio politicians were as crooked as they were made out to be, we deserve what we get. The chips need to fall...Well have two years after next November to pick up the pieces.
I had a neighbor who swore that Reagan closed down his foundry. From the stories he told, it sounded like the Presidential limousine pulled up to the gate, the Marine band played Hail to the Chief, and Reagan got out and put a big golden lock on the front gate of the plant.
I know that Ney and Taft have corrupted Ohio's politics. Taft has been convicted and I worked as a volunteer on Ney's last campaign (never again)---both have to go. But, still, I worry that the ranks of Ohio's statewide GOP will resist strongly any change from the status quo.
I know people like that too, it's insanity. You can't reason with those people.
I doubt many Ohioans would be cynical enough to vote someone this extreme. He is a marine. So what? So was Lee Harvey Oswald and John Murtha.
I don't pretend to know Ohio politics, but out here in Kollyforneah, RHINO's are about all we can hope for in a statewide election. This just isn't a conservative state any more, so running a conservative in a statewide election practically guarantees a nutjob San Francisco Dem will be elected. Sure, Id love to have a conservative Gov, but it just isnt in the cards given our electorate.
We have a big tent, and I'm pragmatic enough to say a RHINO is (barely) better than a dem alternative. If the alternatives to country club RHINOs are dems (cause conservatives wont be seen as mainstream with the voters), then lets work to get these RHINOs honest.
Dangit, can't edit. Meant RINO, not RHINO. Doh!
Relax. Ken Blackwell is poised to run effectively as the GOP anti-Taft, and make it stick. The Coin scandal has about run its course. And the only statewide 'rat officeholder, alcoholic supreme court justice Alice Robie Resnick, is resigning/retiring "to spend more time with family and friends." I'd say the 'rats are still the ones walking the floor at night.
I know, I lived in the Bay area in the '60s and'70s...mighty strange electorate out there, especially the northern (...scratch that north part)--- the whole state. Although when I was there the southern part of the state was staunchly conservative, I think now even Orange county swings left.
You're absolutely right, RINO is the best you can hope for in la-la land. But even RINOs want elected and re-elected. So, I like your idea: "then lets work to get these RHINOs honest."
True. And as a result, the only sizable bloc of union members left in Ohio are government clerks, and they won't stray from the 'rat plantation no matter who the GOP runs or how clean it is. In fact, since a large plurality are black, Blackwell may be the best candidate we have to take a bigger bite of the union vote.
This is 2006. "Unions" doesn't mean UAW, Steelworkers, AFL-CIO, and Teamsters anymore. It means SEIU, NEA, and AFSCME.
I agree. Thanks to the rats' own performance.
But we need more conservative, grass roots activism (albeit a quiet approach so favored by the RINOS) to shift toward a solid, conservative electorate.
I've just started writing a conservative Op-Ed column in my local newspaper, as an example.
And, another big one: The Operators', Carpenters', Steamfitters', etc., unions. Their members live in all parts of the state, travel long distances to the jobs (Road building, factory installation and construction, etc.), are abundant throughout working class Ohio and hate Bush.
If Bob Taft would resign, it would cure a lot of this trouble.
No. As soon as Taft is gone things will right themselves. Gizzi writes this shiite because he needs what to write about. Look at the "The Whine" hackett race. hackett is going nowhere. Speaking of going nowhere, the rats present nothing to Ohio and we will give them Ken Blackwell. Let's stop this silly talk.
