I think it's absolutely killing( and terrifying) Nagin and the City Council that they now preside over a city that 1/4th the size it had been, and more white than it's been in generations. They are simply in a panic.
Watching the speech yesterday, it is to the credit of some of the black audience that they did NOT clap for his atrocious statement. He spoke as tho only his black constituents were listening- guess the cameras and national news never occurred to him.

As much as this is being ripped on the Internet, you'd have to be here, locally, to know how the 'chocolate city' comment is being taken. And- what is worse is the rest of the quote that is being edited out in other places...
"...I don't care what the people Uptown say..."
THAT marks the 'chocolate town' quote for what it really is- racist.

Could you cite a source please. My fiance's house had 11 feet of water in it uptown, on Nashville. That type of comment cannot be allowed to be suppressed. She tends to be a little naive to the mayors political views. Thanks!

The chocolate thing is bad enough but even more important to the recovery of New Orleans and Louisiana are his comments virtually calling Bush a liar and that Bush lied to get us into war with Iraq. Here we are going to Washington practically every day to a Republican congress and Republican president begging for funds and help and he calls Bush a liar. Yeah, Bush is going to be real anxious to help us now.

THAT is what people should be more upset about then his chocolate comments. It's like he is intentionally trying to thwart any chance of a comeback. He is the one people should be petitioning for recall after this fiasco. Although I have nothing against recalling Blanco either.

This morning's "Times Picayune" printed the speech in its entirety. The exact quote was ' ...Uptown or wherever...'.
Nothing like a Mayor coming out and admitting he doesn't care what a huge part of his tax base says!
