After I posted my list, I immediately thought of Charles K. as one I should have included. In addition to having been a lawyer, he was also a doctor (the physician type). He has great grasp of the issues and a lot of knowledge of many subjects which he artfully combines to generate cogent and reasonable conclusions. As interesting to listen to as he is to read. He also has an ability to flit away counter arguments with a single sentence (often dispatching the likes of Juan Williams with a crucial fact that obliterates liberal arguments with ease).
