Apple profit surges 95 percent on iPod sales

Apple Computer reported a 95 percent rise in quarterly profits on exploding sales of its iPod music players, and notched more than one billion dollars in sales through its retail stores. ADVERTISEMENT

Apple s stock, though, fell in after-hours trading because Apple offered a forecast that fell short of Wall Street estimates.

Apple reported net income of 565 million dollars, or 65 cents a share, for the first fiscal quarter to December 31, up from 295 million a year earlier. The report beat analyst forecasts of a profit of 55 cents per share.

Sales rose 64 percent to 5.75 billion dollars. Chief executive Steve Jobs disclosed Apple's quarterly revenue result January 10 at the Macworld conference in San Francisco.

Consumers snapped up 14 million iPod devices during the holiday quarter, and Apple has now sold more than 40 million since late 2001. The groundbreaking product has transformed Apple from a niche PC maker into the leading purveyor of digital media.

Apple also sold 1.25 million Macintosh computers during the quarter, a figure that was up 20 percent from the year-earlier figure. Apple is in the process of transitioning its Mac line to Intel rocessors, and it expects to have all of its PCs running on Intel chips by the end of this year.

"We are thrilled to report the best quarter in Apple's history," said Jobs.

You can do so much better than an iPod at such a better price.

The insiders I know, whose info has always checked out, tell me in strict confidence that the next iPod model will have a keyboard, a 17'' screen, willrun Apple's version of Linux, and will be smaller than the current iPod nano.

" It tumbled another 4% in after-hours trading following the report."

Didn't "outperform" enough.

Yes it did, and if you look at AAPL History it the stock always fall on good news. Apple got picked on today for a delay in the pipeline for the intel machines. This stock has brought me happiness since 98.

Who the hell wants an MP3 player built into their cellphone? Last thing I want to have happen is to have a phone call come through my earphones when I'm halfway through a Beethoven symphony or even George Thorogood's greatest hits for that matter.

Yep, though I'm sure some clones will happen by soon for a quarter of the price.

Well, one of the biggie analysts came in with a price target in excess of $100. I have no doubt we'll see it. ;-)

iPod is about content. Will they be able to provide the large array of offerings that Apple is?

The iPod is neat but:

1. If you're a PC user you have to learn how to use iTunes, a fairly complicated and finicky piece of software, just to copy music to the iPod.

2. Apple should offer a separate battery charger for their newest iPod models at extremely low cost--a lot of people don't want to hog a USB port just to charge the unit.

You can do so much better than an iPod at such a better price.

I have a Creative Zen Touch, 40 Gb. Paid $250 for it and so far have 725 full CDs loaded on it (almost 8,000 tracks) in high-quality WMA, with 76% space used, so plenty of room for more. I have another 100 or so CDs around the house somewhere to get to. My entire collection in one box, with better sound quality than the iCult provides, at a lower price, with a battery that'll last 20 or more hours.

For the life of me, I can't understand why someone would pay upwards of $200 for something that only holds 20-30 albums. Unless they're making some kind of weird gay fashion-slave statement, I suppose.

Man, I could go for 6 or 8 of those, too. It's been almost 30 years . . . . . .

I'd probably even get chili on one or two for old time's sake.
