Splitsville for Perelman & Barkin (incessant liberalism makes billionaire preserve prenup loophole)
New York Post ^ | January 20, 2006 | LIZ SMITH and PHILIP MESSING

Billionaire businessman Ron Perelman's five-year marriage to actress Ellen Barkin is over — and the legendary corporate raider is getting out of the match just in time to save himself a huge bundle of money, sources said yesterday. The Revlon boss — who gained infamy in the late 1990s during a bitter custody battle with third wife Patricia Duff — served his latest spouse with divorce papers at their post Upper East Side mansion yesterday, a source familiar with the couple said.

Under the pair's prenup, the bald buyout baron is set to pay the sultry "Sea of Love" actress $20 million in the event of a split, a source said. But the marriage contract stipulated that the figure would jump dramatically if the couple stuck together until a predetermined date — and that date was fast approaching, the source said.

Perelman first met Barkin in 1999 at Vanity Fair's vaunted post-Oscars party, where he reportedly propositioned her by saying, "Are you single or married or what?"

Sources said Barkin's Hollywood liberalism caused some friction in their marriage — such as when her political convictions prompted her to refuse a ride in a Perelman aide's Hummer SUV and when she demanded that her hubby take down an American flag because she believed it was a "symbol of war."

-snip-

Perelman eventually won custody over his daughter, Caleigh, from Duff and was named her legal guardian. Duff, a former Democratic Party fund-raiser, was given extensive visitation rights with the girl, now 10.

I didn't know Duff lost custody.

Money trumps mothers, apparently.

Caleigh was in a no-win situtation regardless. As least so got the parent with the most money (and a new younger mommy in the near future).

Funny---I was thinking just a few days ago, for maybe the first time EVER, about Ellen Barkin and Ron Perelman and their odd-seeming marriage. Now it's over. I was thinking about her while watching on Broadway her ex-husband Gabriel Byrne in Eugene O Neill's play "A Touch of the Poet" (a real historical artifact, probably written in the 1930s, but set outside Boston at an Inn-Tavern, in 1828.
So I guess the field is wide open for Gabe again---only this time Ellen will be RICH! I really liked her in DINER and THE BIG EASY, and am not surprised to find that she seems to be a political bimbo on the level of Streisand.

"not surprised to find that she seems to be a political bimbo on the level of Streisand."

Bingo! She's typical of the hollyweirdos. They are so self-absorbed they don't have time to read or educate themselves as to what's really happening in the world. They spend days shopping and partying and filming and getting purdy for the cameras and they are clueless individuals.

Ellen Barkin looked like Admiral Ackbar when she was in her 30's. Now she's 50.

Interesting question.

I guess enough money makes it "nicer" or legit.

Just in the nick of time.

Why is it that so many of the current Hollywood crowd are so Anti-American.

Why is it that so many of the current Hollywood crowd think that because they played a particular part in a movie/show that they then become experts on what is right or wrong.

Why is it that so many of the Hollywood crowd think that because they are 'stars' they are special?

Really...I thought Gabriel Byrne was gay and the marriage was a sham....

You got me to thinking, so I did a quick Google search on Gabriel Byrne and found that he is NOT to be confused with Gay Byrne, and Irish TV and Radio personality (really)/
I was noticing, though,in his Touch of the Poet performance, that his hands and arms were always fluttering about delicately. I ascribed this to his character's being at least half-drunk throughout the play, and not the actor's gayness. Byrne is a fine actor, seriously: try to see him in Cronenberg's SPIDER, one of the finest movies of recent years.
