MATTHEWS, N.C. -- Two twin girls were stabbed to death Friday at their home on Creek Pointe Drive, police said.

The father of the 5-year-olds, David Lauren Crespi, [has been charged with murdering them.

Medic reported that Crespi, 45, called 911 at 12:45 p.m., saying he fatally stabbed his daughters. He also threatened to kill himself, Medic said.

When police arrived at the scene, Crespi was waiting for them outside the home. The children were inside, and there was nothing paramedics could do to save them.

Officials couldn’t come up with an immediate explanation.

“We’re not anywhere where we can talk about a motive in this, or any reasons why someone would take the lives of two little girls,” said Keith Bridges, a spokesman for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

Bridges said counselors had been brought in to talk with the officers and crime scene technicians who saw the girls.

"I can't describe to you how horrific this is and how sad," he said. "It has been a toll on the police officers who were the first on the scene and got control of it."

The children’s mother and their three older siblings were not home at the time of the attack, police said.

Many neighbors were in shock Friday. They tried to comfort each other as they learned about the news. Many had young children who played with the girls.

"We're a family neighborhood," neighbor Julie Sheehan said. "They're a part of this neighborhood, and we just have to pray for them."

Crespi is a senior vice president in Wachovia's audit division. He faces two counts of first-degree murder.

(01-20) 16:45 PST Matthews, N.C. (AP wire) -- http://www.sfgate.com

Earlier Friday, police spokesman Keith Bridges said the suspect — later identified as Crespi — called 911 about 1 p.m. Friday to report the slayings. He later surrendered at the scene without resistance, Bridges said. (snip)

Property records showed the $505,000 home is owned by Kimberli and David Crespi. A birth announcement published in The Sacramento Bee newspaper indicated that the couple had twin girls born Oct. 16, 2000.

The couple had five children, according to an article published last fall on the Web site of Sacramento State University, which mentioned David Crespi as a member of a "Sac State Dynasty." He and his wife both graduated from the school with bachelor's degrees in 1983.

From:

"Police said they had not been called to the Crespi home before. A check of civil court records shows no signs of marital problems. And David Crespi had no criminal record in North Carolina.

"Several mothers from the neighborhood of half-million-dollar homes stood outside the crime-scene tape crying and hugging. Husbands rushed home from work and met them in the street. And within a few hours, a school bus dropped children off just a block from where police had closed the road."

How sad. The 2 people a child should feel safe with are their parents.

This is more than I can bear to think about--

The father must be possessed by demons.

Evil, pure evil. I guess the headline with the note that he was a wealthy banker was put there to make him sound more evil. What does someones social class have to do with anything. A heinous crime is just that. It does not matter how much money someone has when they commit the crime.

Who knows what evil lurks in the mind of man.

A line from an old old radio program.

But it's true. No rational person would commit such a crime but the death penalty seems appropriate as with the savage who killed little innocent Nixzmary in NY.

They bought their 4,900-square foot house when they moved to the area, from Sacramento, after Wachovia acquired the Money Store in 2001. The two oldest children are from his first marriage; he married Kim in 1994 after his first wife died of a brain tumor. Kim adopted his children.

David was undergoing treatment for cancer, FWIW.

Was there a DVD of "the shinning" in the player? Perhaps he "corrected them". I think the ones in the movie were twins, and about that age.

The father must be possessed by demons.

It's more likely that he possessed by:drugs, booze, psychotic episode,a desire (or need) for life insurance proceeds or a basically psychopathic personality.

I agree. Severe mental breakdown or out of control organic psychiatric illness. This cuts across all socioeconomic classes. Prayers for this family...

The headline for this post was a combination of two headlines. I included it because many FReepers work for Wachovia and know him in California and up and down the east coast.

David was undergoing treatment for cancer, FWIW.

If this is true,a deep, deep depression could be the cause...or perhaps the radiation therapy or chemo drugs could have scrambled his brain cells.

"Crespi is a senior vice president in Wachovia's audit division. He faces two counts of first-degree murder."

Any missing money reported by Wachovia? Was he possibly involved in something there as well?

I can't even imagine what the rest of his family is going through.

David was undergoing treatment for cancer

That certainly could be relevant.

And he certainly seemed to enjoy success in life. It boggles my mind to wonder how someone like this can, without warning, go completely insane.

In these inexplicable cases, the first thing that usually comes to my mind is whether or not the perp was on Prozac or something similar....and that often ends up being the case.
