Jordan's King Abdullah II, whose interfaith efforts over the past year impressed Catholics, Jews and Muslims alike, will have a supporting role at this year's National Prayer Breakfast, according to a key aide.
Although he would not be the first Muslim to speak at the annual event at the Washington Hilton, he will have a bigger role than his predecessors, said Joseph Lumbard, special adviser to the king for interfaith affairs.
Plans are to have the king offer a prayer or say a few words at the Feb. 2 breakfast, then give the keynote speech at a lunch for evangelical leaders that same day.
"It will be the king's first major address in the United States after the [Nov. 9] Amman attacks," Mr. Lumbard said, referring to the triple suicide bombings that killed about 60 people. "His position is not that there is a clash of civilizations, but, as the attacks in Amman illustrate, there's an attack on civilization as such."

Hmm...I predict objections to this coming shortly in the thread. A Muslim prayer at the White House Prayer Breakfast? Uh-oh.
The Annual Prayer Breakfast is not a White House event.
Oops. You're right. It's the National Prayer Breakfast. I misremembered as I posted. Still, I expect objections. I also expect that some who would normally attend will not attend.

Oh, I agree with you completely. Islam is just another religion. There are haters in all religions. I'm just saying that there will be those who hate Islam and Muslims so much that they'll be horrified that a Muslim might pray at this breakfast. There are Christian leaders who will not attend because of that simple fact.
Why not have a Druid priest speak, too?

Ha! I'll bet there's a story behind that. I remember what I went through to get atheist on mine. The first supply sgt. said, "What's that? Some kind of protestant?" I finally got it, but it took the intervention of, of all things, the Catholic chaplain at Lackland AFB.
He was most helpful. Nice guy, too.
I just wrote "atheist" on the form and that's how mine came back.

The King is between a rock and a hardplace in that region. An extended hand of friendship from the US and Israel could result in a very strong/positive alliance for us against our real enemies.
