Now can we drill in ANWAR?

Over the weekend, I saw some female - I didn't catch whether she was a politian or one of those Beckelesque "consultants" - saying that this is all the administration's fault because we've done nothing at all to reduce our need for foreign oil.

"Doesn't matter when it comes to the price of oil."

I have been chaistized here for saying such things. Many, (most?), FReepers believe that the oil compainies are NOT colluding. That they are reacting to market forces and are acting in their best business interests. In other words, fine upstanding companies.

Well of course, the president hasn't used the authority of his office (unconstitutionally of course) to force the proletariat to ride bikes and burn candles.

How much longer are we going to put up with this garbage? Years after my children have succumbed to old age? I thought, after the energy crises during the '70's, that people had woke up, yet here we are, a quarter of a century later, and nothing has improved!

If you're referring to this thread:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1562973/posts

that's a speech from 2002. Or have you seen a more recent statement? NOTE: I am not defending McCain (spit) and I never would. I'm only correcting the claim that it was a recent statement.

Oh, while you're at it... raise prices at the grocery store, WalMart, Loew's, JCPenney's, etc. It costs them more to ship their goods from distributor to the store. Then, when the gasoline prices go back down... DON'T reduce the prices, just leave them where they are. The public won't notice that a loaf of bread costs $3.00.

It would be worth it to have $100 oil for a few weeks or months if we could finally break the back of the radical environmentalists who keep us as slaves to Mideast oil. Then we need to drill drill drill. Alaska, California, Florida (yes, Jeb, Florida), Western shale. #1 national priority. Total energy independence. Run our slate of candidates in November on that issue and smash through the 60 senator barrier.

It doesn't matter where we get our oil from. Iran cuts off Europe and they pay more for supplies that would come to the US. Or do you really think Chavez won't take the chance to stab at the US?

The problem is that when Iran cuts its production the people who are buying from them will go elsewhere and bid up the cost of the remaining sources.

The ONLY answer is to reduce the demand for oil. One to do that is to raise the price.

Arab countries are "double dipping." First they make tons of hard cash selling oil to the West. Then wealthy Saudis, Kuatis, Egyptians, and others, make money speculating on oil futures. They do it themselves, openly, or through front companies, bankers, and hedge funds (like Soros). The international oil market promotes this infectious corruption. Does anybody in D.C. mention the reality of oil speculation? Not really. Most are too busy begging for cash from lobbyists. In a few months, OPEC may switch from USD to Euros. This will further increase the pressure on average wage earners. Does anybody even care? Nada por nada. People are too busy using their homes like ATM machines. "Gotta buy that new SUV," they think, while jabbering on cells phones in heavy traffic.

McCain was talking tough about oil being used for blackmail on FOX News yesterday.

He's right.

Oil is indeed being used as blackmail.

"I could see oil prices literally jumping over the $100 per barrel mark," said James Bartis, a senior researcher at Rand Corp."

LITERALLY jumping? So these prices have legs?

We went back to sleep in the 80s and 90s. No Administration from Reagan thru Clintax has even suggested alternatives, much less help to pass legislation that would help.

Yep. Until that supply runs out or until the next Big Hurricane gives 'em an excuse to jack the prices up in the name of capitalism.

Grocery prices here went up about 25% - 30% over the holidays. November and December prices were nuts except for some stores that were selling frozen pumpkin pies at $ 2 each. Suddenly, after Thanksgiving and Christmas passed, prices are back down again. There were some good sales of clothing out there. All the stores were selling goods made in China, India, Honduras and Mexico. Nothing I saw was made in the U.S. Not even video games, radioshack toys and other battery powered junk. Hip hip hooray for the American way!

Actually, at US$100/barrel you will see the petroleum companies invest heavily in high oil yield algae production. Scientists have discovered growing certain types of algae in the same type of tanks used by large-scale commercial brewery companies like Anheuser-Busch and SABMiller could yield the type of biomass that can be processed into diesel fuel, heating oil, possibly kerosene for gas turbine engines, and even possibly gasoline! And the waste from this processing can be processed further into animal feed and ethanol fuel.

In short, we are within technological reach of an unlimited supply of motor fuels.

You realize that most of the posters here consider us dolts for even complaining about such things. The attitude seems to be: "If they can stick it to you, they should. If you don't like it, figure out how to get out of it."

Complaining about high natural gas/oil prices is like complaining about gravity. Anyone that jumps off a bridge and complains that they're falling is a dolt.

"Complaining about high natural gas/oil prices is like complaining about gravity. "

Actually a dolt is one who would confuse a natural irrevokable law with a man made system.

Gas prices are a dynamic system, to be sure, but it definately is a man made system. Therefore, it can be controlled.

I wasn't actually referring to the oil companies. But rather the affect that either sanctions or bombings will have on the price of oil. It is going to scare a lot of people. It doesn't really matter that we don't get oil for Iran (I have no idea if we do). But Iran does supply a lot of the world's oil, so obviously an oil embargo is going to drive the prices up. Plus if they decide to pull their oil from the market for awhile in response to an attack...Supply vs. demand will dictate the price.
