When Black Jack went to the Mexican Border to find Pancho Villa he carried, on a mule drawn wagon, the entire Air Force. Two Wright Flyers would fly reconnaisance and "chase" the enemy.
Today we can do better. A few Predator drones and some Hellfire missile strikes will convince the Mexican government that we intend to protect our borders from these invasions. We can send them a map which will identify "no flee zones!"

"Were they really Mexican soldiers?"
If Mexico denies that these were soldiers, then our officers should engage the armed actors when encountered.

How far do a governor's powers extend when it comes to defense of the citizenry against border infiltration?

I just heard on Fox News that there is an armed stand off going on between border patrol and men dressed in Mexican Army uniforms. It remains to be seen if they are real Mexican military or fakes in uniform. I heard on Fox & Friends this morning that the Mexican government is printing and distributing thousands of maps of the U.S.boarder to their citizens. These maps are designed to help them go the safest routes when they illegally enter our country! I suppose the good news is that we'll know where to find them, if our boneheaded politicians allow it, that is...

Mexico is so corrupt its likely that these ARE active-duty soldiers.
We've got a lawless land on our southern border and it's moving northward.

Chertoff is a meathead. Since when do foreign troops enter the US and it's an event described as "overblown?"
Not to mention hauling large amounts of grass.

Remember, it's not an invasion if they're Mexicans. (Our President sold our nation to them.)

I absolutely agree. I don't know why they didn't.

They should do as Lieutenant Patton did, engage the outlaws, tie their carcasses to the front of the Hummvee, and bring them back for identification. No quarter.

At what point does it become ok for local armed citizens to form up militias to protect their families and their property? Militias have won wars against armies before, and I think that the US 2A is alive and well for this exact circumstance. When does it stop?
