These numbers are incredible. Where and when I grew up, getting an abortion was viewed by many as almost trivial decision. Times have really changed. If conservatives manage to stay in power in this country, I think the day will soon arrive when abortion is basically prohibited.

BTW -- the Village Voice had an interesting article about abortion, wherein the writer describes the huge increase in the number of pro-life women who marched on DC recently. Yet, the writer never mentioned at all anything about people who oppose the pro-lifers. It was like the writer had already accepted a post-Roe America, where an abortion is much more difficult if not impossible to get.
I found this to be a rather odd and strange tone, coming from the Village Voice. The article is
HERE.

I've always been fairly apathetic on the issue.. I think abortion is wrong of course, and that Roe was based on terribly tortured reasoning... I just can't wait until it's no longer the defining issue in American politics.

Don't forget, this is Zogby. I'll bet the percentage of those who favor abortion is really lower.

It doesn't help the pro-abortion forces that pregnant women can now get a full-color, high-definition movie of their ultrasound. When you see something like that, there's no doubt about what you're seeing.

Polling results are open to interpretation. I interpret this polling data as good news. After 33 years and 46 million abortions, any good news on the pro-life front is welcome.

Change the wording and you will get even higher numbers. Instead of asking if "they favored the availability of abortion in all cases", ask, "Do you think that abortion should be used as birth control?" and "Do you think that it should be legal to abort full term babies?" and, "Should a 12 year old girl be allowed to get an abortion without her parent's or guardian's permission?" and your numbers will drop down around 20% (which coincidentially is the number of people who also describe themselves as "liberal").

... Ten years ago, maybe just seven or eight years ago, pro-choice forces were in the ascendancy and posted pro-choice numbers in the area of 65% to 68%." The huge influx of Hispanic people over that time might play a factor in this poll.

Among Republicans, 77% said that abortion destroys a human life and is manslaughter, while 13% disagreed with that statement. Among Democrats, 15% believe that abortion destroys a human life and is manslaughter, and 70% disagreed. Remember this, the next time someone says there's no real difference between the 2 parties.

I'd be curious to know how much the 'morning after' pill has influenced these numbers, and a breakdown of how many consider RU-486 to be an abortion in the same moral sense as the clinical procedure.

I think partial credit can go to the beautiful Serrin Foster of Feminists for Life.
(Before anyone jumps on me for bringing "feminism" to the thread let me say that S.C Chief Justice John Roberts' wife, Jane, is a member and former board member. The word feminism here is just a stealth tool.)
Starting over 10 years ago she began speaking at college campuses all over the country with her "pro-woman, pro-life" message. She continues her mission today. After learning that most young people enter college either pro-life or neutral on the position and leave as abortion proponents, FFL decided to target campuses.
Serrin is a remarkable speaker; charming, witty and unifying rather than alienating. I've seen her change people's minds in 40 minutes flat.

I went to the website, but Zoggy doesn't give the questions asked the participants. I'm skeptical that 52% actually approve of abortions in all cases.

"Forty-three percent oppose abortion, though most of those believe there should be exceptions in the cases of rape, incest, or when the pregnancy posed a grave threat to the life of the mother. A total of 9% said they always oppose abortion."
Well...It sounds like there's at least 9% of the people polled here, that understand the phrase, "THOU SHALT NOT KILL". I think it even made it to the commandment stage...

The mainstream is changing course. Many rivers do, over time.
Just goes to show that when the left gloats over a new found "constitutional right" .... and uses it in wretched excess (abortion on demand for any reason at any moment up until birth) .... moral revulsion rises.

The question I always ask is "if a woman wants to terminate a pregnancy, then why not just induce labor?" That gets people off of the "right to control one's body" argument and into the "we need to get rid of these unwanted people" agrument. It's fairly easy to point out how barbaric that argument is.
Maybe, just maybe, people are beginning to understand - don't sleep with someone if you don't want a baby. Men should know this already - they are legally responsible, no questions asked, for their offspring.
Maybe the culture of life is winning . . .

The Zogby survey highlights a dramatic partisan split on the question. While 74% of Democrats said they favor abortion the availability of in all circumstances, just 9% of Republicans feel the same way. And while 78% of Republicans oppose abortion either completely or with some exceptions, only 17% of Democrats agree. Voting Democrat is almost inexcusable.
