Can the White House Warm Up to Hamas?-Election Win Is Not an Endorsement of Militancy

Hamas' stunning victory in the Palestinian elections left the Bush Administration in a difficult position this morning, forced to reconcile the fruits of its push for democracy in the Middle East with its goal of peace in the region. In response, the White House argued that the vote was a rejection of the ruling guard Fatah's corruption, rather than the peace process itself. Speaking at a press conference this morning, President Bush called the Hamas win a “wake-up” call for the Fatah leadership. "You see, when you give people the vote, give them the chance to express themselves at the polls and they're unhappy with the status quo, they'll let you know," he said. "The people are demanding honest government. The people want services. They want to be able to raise their children in an environment in which they can get a decent education and they can find health care. And so the elections should open the eyes of the old guard there in the Palestinian territories. I like the competition of ideas. I like people who have to go out and say, vote for me, and here's what I'm going to do. There's something healthy about a system that does that."

Still, for all the celebration of democracy, Bush warned Hamas and sidestepped the question of whether he would be willing to deal with Hamas. "If your platform is the destruction of Israel, it means you're not a partner in peace,” he said. "I made it very clear that the United States does not support political parties that want to destroy our ally, Israel, and that people must renounce that part of their platform. But the government hasn't formed yet. They're beginning to talk about how to form the government."

Would the American left condemn the President's actions if the KKK was put in charge of a small nation?

'W' was good this Morning! Had command of almost all issues.

Although his assertion that democracy is working and the vote represents people desire for change from corrupt leadership, YET HE ASKED CONDI TO CALL ABBAS AND ASK HIM TO REMAIN IN OFFICE, was rather inconsistent.

Lucklily no at the Press Conference picked up on it.

Rush said something very brilliant. Fatta(sp?) is no different from Hammas, except that the liberals accepted Fatta as a progressive group working for peace. With Hammas, you know what you get. Israel now can say, the next time Hammas attacks, that they were attacked by an enemy state, and their response can be more decisive..

So the spin begins. It's a shame the MSM just doesn't get it. What could the Palestinians possibly have done or said to convince them it WAS an endorsement of terrorism?

How about popularly elect a terrorist organization?

How about having leadership that vows to destroy Israel through violence?

How about having charters that proclaim their goal as wiping Israel off the planet?

How about rabidly embracing the genocidal aspects of the Quran?

If the MSM isn't convinced yet then they're willfully blind.

Yes, it is.

Either that, or the Palestinian voters are really dumb.

Hammas as a ruling party probably won't last long because they will not be able to produce safety and goodies for the people.

Fatah is completely discredited now. I think that there may be a new political party to come out of this.

There may even be a split between the West Bank and Gaza.

What gives anyone the idea that whoever is in charge of the PA won't be coddled and clucked over? Cripes, we kissed Arafat's butt for years. What's different?

Pour the gasoline, set the place on fire, and let the rats scatter to their fine Arab "friends" ('cept the Arabs don't want them, either).

YET HE ASKED CONDI TO CALL ABBAS AND ASK HIM TO REMAIN IN OFFICE

I would imagine that, right now, Hamas wants Abbas to stay in office too.

Total BS. The bomb-making. baby-killing Hamas types think it is a big win!

Using Hamas for peace is like screwing for virginity.
