Senate GOP Seeks to Force Vote on Alito

Die-hard Democratic critics of Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito threatened to block a vote on his confirmation Thursday, and Republicans countered with a move designed to ensure his approval by early next week.
"It is time to establish an end point" in the debate over President Bush's selection to replace Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, said Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn.
Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid offered no support for Sens. John Kerry, Edward M. Kennedy and other members of the rank-and-file who are threatening a filibuster in an attempt to keep Alito off the high court.
"There's been adequate time for people to debate," Reid said.

Vote while Kerry is in DAVOS. He'd miss another key vote.
What's Kerry doing there? I thought that event was for capitalists. What lobbyist is paying the airfare or is it we the sucker taxpayer getting stuck?
Pretty much.
Either Alito gets nuked through, or a bunch dems cross over and end a filibuster, which would be a massive slap in the face to both Kerry and a big chunk of the left.
From a republican point of view, its can't lose.
If we nuke him through, we have nothing to worry about at all with future confirmation hearings, if we break a filibuster, the dems who crossed over, with see big drops in financial support.
If this had been Evan Bayh or something, it would have been a different story.
Kennedy said, "The nominee is deficient in his commitment ... to individual rights, individual liberties, women's rights and racial equality."
That is very good. Judge Alito will face the SC with an open mind and allow the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights guide him in his decisions.
