Duplex Gutted as Man Burns Yule Tree Indoors (2006 Darwin Contender?)

A man burning a Christmas tree in a fireplace Wednesday destroyed a town of Windsor duplex when the tree erupted in flames.

Dane County sheriff's deputies said Terry J. Miles, 30, shoved a tree in the fireplace at the duplex he rented at 6800 Sunset Meadow Drive. He set it afire shortly after 3 p.m. and the fire quickly got out of control and Miles grabbed the burning tree and tried to get it outside. While he was rushing through the home the flames from the tree spread to the house, destroying both sides of the duplex.

Miles suffered first- and second-degree burns to his face and forearm and was taken to a hospital for treatment. The occupant of the other side of the duplex was not hurt.

The fire is estimated to have caused $220,000 in damage.

Sure. If it's dangerous and deadly, THEN it's a Christmas Tree. Before it was on fire, it was a 'holiday tree.'

Yes, it's only a "Christmas" tree when there's death and destruction involved. Kind of like the only time they mention the type of vehicle in a car accident is when it's an "SUV."

Still not as stupid as he could be.

Now if he burned the place down while lighting a "Blue Flame", that would be the epitome!

The neighbors better keep an eye on the guy. What else could he burning in this fireplace? Think Tom Hanks and the movie The Burbs.

Well, it won't win the Darwin, but it sure shows a guy stuck on stupid. Any chance this guy graduated from the University of Madison a notorious left wing bastion?

Whoa--

I myself nearly set the house on fire while burning a Christmas tree in the fireplace.

I tipped the tree over onto a large sheet of plastic and sawed the limbs off, then cut the trunk into several sections. I put some limbs onto the hearth and touched them off.

Flames billowed out of the fireplace and up against the mantle. My (now ex) wife began screaming unrepeatable things to me, as you might imagine. Fortunately the conflagration died down before setting the living room ablaze.

(I should email her this story)
