Romney's abortion code needs updating (and Jindal)
Townhall.com ^ | 1/26/06 | Stuart Rothenberg

In responding to a question by political analyst Charlie Cook, of The Cook Political Report, Romney acknowledged that he only recently decided to accept the pro-life label. That’s certainly a problem for the Massachusetts governor, but an even bigger problem may be that he began his response by referring to “my history on choice.”

Pro-life activists never refer to the issue of abortion as “choice.” That’s a word – a construction – that comes from the abortion rights movement.

Looks like Romney won't be convincing people he's pro-life any time soon....

Rothenberg also says Jindal's going to run against Blanco again, which would be fantastic!

No more than he can convince anyone he's not anti-Constitution.

Face it, Romney sucks.

Being from Massachusetts, might hurt Gov. Mitt Romney as I believe you must be a gun grabber, for the murder of unborn babies and for queer marriage to be elected state wide (same for New York).

The issue is the domain of the US Supreme Court, until we get Roe-v.-Wade overturned. How's Romney on judicial appointments? I'd rather have a someone who would prefer that abortion rights exist but would fight tooth and nail to end judicial tyrrany than a pro-life, born again Christian who would fight for Snarlin' Arlen and then nominate Harriet Miers.

Ideological purity is less important than a willingness to fight.

Like we need another Massachusetts politician who was against it before he was for it.

Dear dangus,

I agree with you, but it's quite likely that someone like Mr. Romney, who clearly is not a committed pro-lifer, will not see things quite the same way, constitutionally-speaking, as we committed pro-lifers.

Mr. Romney might agree that the Supreme Court has done much to usurp the powers and roles of the other two branches of government, but he may not view Roe as much of a usurpation. Thus, a potential justice who, say, would vote to overturn Kelo, but is fine with Roe, might be an acceptable nominee to Mr. Romney.

Therefore, Mr. Romney is not an acceptable nominee to me.

Dear samadams2000,

No, I don't really think Mr. Romney is dumb at all. I think he's actually a tremendously bright guy.

BUT.

It's quite clear that he has absolutely no feel at all for social conservatives.

I don't think that's an intelligence thing, just a culture thing. He is clearly part of the cultural elite of our country. The whole abortion thing mystifies these folks.

I suspect Mr. Bush is really part of this gang, himself. But he's more adept at reading large groups of folks who are different from himself, and thus, at the very least, he's better at feigning the commitment to social conservative causes, even if he doesn't quite really buy fully into them.

And we've seen him nominate two justices who may actually turn out to understand that "abortion rights" are no more part of the Constitution than is a right to having spaghetti and meatballs for dinner on Thursdays.
