"Simply more evidence to refute the idea that China is going to go western anytime soon." It could mean just the opposite. These incidents sound a lot like what was happening in Eastern Europe in the 1980s and we know that ended in very rapid change.

I can't say for certain you are wrong. I'm simply stating my opinion. You're comparing a nation on an economic rise, with a nation suffering an economic colapse.
