Collins, a Republican, said Alito has excellent qualifications and has received the highest possible recommendation from the American Bar Association. She said she was impressed with testimony on Alito's behalf during his confirmation hearing from seven of his colleagues on the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
Maine's other U.S. senator, Olympia Snowe, was still weighing the nomination and has not announced her decision, said spokeswoman Antonia Ferrier.

So, does this make 57 votes for Alito?
Let's hope that all of the RINOs come to their senses.
It looks better all the time.
The tide continues to turn.
I imagine Judge Alito is getting tired of standing on her bathroom scale.
Yes it does, with 34 against and 9 undecided.
Chaffee, Collins and Snowe are becoming more and more irrelevant.
If we could get a 2-4 more Republican seats in the Senate, those three would be left with no power.
Olympia Snowe is up for reelection this year and faces primary opposition from a conservative state legislator. Collins decision increases pressure on her to do the right thing.
"PORTLAND, Maine --Sen. Susan Collins announced Thursday that she will vote in favor of the nomination of Judge Samuel Alito to be the next justice of the U.S. Supreme Court."
This is not new news. Collins votes has been long counted. To my knowledge, Snowe has still not announced.
I still think it's laughable that the NE coast thinks they run this country.
I'm even more surprised by this than by HilLIARy's opposing Alito.
we only need Snowe's vote for cloture. if she gives us that, the rest is gravy.
They did? They are stupid. This is old news.
I cannot accept that Olympia Snowe thinks that if she votes in favour of Alito she would lose support in Maine. I think that she just has a mental problem.
I believe this still leaves only 56 Votes for Alito.
53 Republicans and 3 Democrats.
2 GOP Senators - Snowe and Chaffee have yet to announce.
1 Dem Dorgan on North Dakota is leaning to a Yes Vote.
Other Dems, primarily form red states, have said they will not filibuster. Pryor, Landrieu, Salazar.
I will re-iterate. I think it's laughable that the NE coast thinks they run this country.
I have a good idea. What if 2-3 conservatives vote against closure, forcing a filibuster. Frist then brings the constitutional option up, and we end this silliness once and for all. BTW, I agree that 2-3 more Republican Senators make the Rinos, even from my state, Maine, irrelevent.
Holy Cripe!!! Ya gotta be kiddin me!!! A northeastern Republican is actually going to actually vote to publically support the nominee of a Republican President for the Supreme Court of the United States Of America? Unfricken believable!!! This must set some kind of astounding historical, or maybe even a hysterical precedent!!! (or is it an Arlen Sepectator "super-precedent," or even a "super-duper-precedent," or some such trivial pursuit-precedent?)
The vote will be on Tuesday morning, and there's every reason to be optomistic about it.
