Bob Woodruff had a comfortable career in corporate law ahead of him when he took a year away to teach in China. It was 1989, the year of the Tiananmen Square protest, and amid the chaos, Woodruff discovered his passion for journalism.
He was reporting from of another volatile part of the world on Sunday, this time as the 44-year-old co-anchor of ABC News' "World News Tonight," when an explosive device detonated, seriously injuring him and a cameraman north of Baghdad, Iraq.
Woodruff grew up in the Detroit area and attended Colgate University and the University of Michigan law school before taking a corporate law job in New York.
Along the way, he also learned Chinese, and he decided to spend part of 1989 in Beijing teaching law. When the Tiananmen Square protests began, he got involved, signing on as a translator for CBS News anchor Dan Rather.
"When I realized there was a job that existed in this world where I could be in the middle of huge world events and actually get paid for it, it was an epiphany for me," Woodruff told The Associated Press in a recent interview.
It would be interesting to find out what he was actually teaching.
What would be interesting would be if we could see if this forum could get through one of these "incidents" without all the smarmy remarks and veiled insinuations.
What the hell are you trying to say?
This man just may be dying, regardless of his politics.
It's downright tacky of you to try to turn this into something it's not.
Sounds like he would have been a good candidate for deep cover as a CIA operative? Bet the Chicoms think he was.
This story has the feel of an obituary. Are they writing him off already?
This reads a helluva lot like an obituary. Did I miss something?
BTW, I'm not impressed with his liberal credentials. Why don't they write about his journalistic credentials?
For some people, there is a conspiracy in everything.
For some people, I guess the concept of disagreeing with people over JUST politics is a stretch.
I agree with you to a point. It would be equally interesting to see if the MSM could get through it without painting this incident as something it's not.
It's not a reason to attack Bush instead of the terrorists that carried out the attack.
It's not the tale of an American hero suffering for a cause.
It's just another story about just another convoy being attacked. Why is this one special just because a reporter was along for the ride? Why doesn't Joe Snuffy get the same attention when his convoy is attacked while he's out training Iraqi police or army guys?
I won't make veiled insinuations. I'll make bold-faced accusations. This story is about the press making a martyr out of one of their own at the expense of heroes who are trying to make things better. This story is being used to highlight the bad aspects of what's going on in Iraq while ignoring the fact that the period since the last election has actually had fewer than average casualties since we kicked Saddam out.
The MSM has no business making this war about them, but that's what they're doing.
I haven't seen any reporters attacking Bush about this.
And I see no reason for us to act like fools just because the press does.
I thought we were better than that.
In the movie BROADCAST NEWS one of the characters says to another broadcaster, "always remember, the news is always about us."
It's been that way since the sixties. But that's over now.
Long live the internet!
I realized there was a job that existed in this world where I could be in the middle of huge world events
There is the problem. Just report the event, not be part of it; not be in the middle.
When the press is the story I have to turn it off.
News anchors and head injuries don't go together. I bet even if he recovers, they'll find a way to take him off the network news.
Another legend in the making?
Davey ... Davey Crockett ... king of the wild frontier
As for Mr. Woodruff's injuries, I can only say that when you put yourself in harm's way, bad things sometimes happen. That is indeed regrettable, but that's the way it works.
I find that the word smarmy is synonymous with unctuous. The definition of these words is defined as "having the quality or character of oil" and "characterized by affected, exaggerated or insincere earnestness." Howlin's remarks fit neither of these definitions.
This little tutorial in the use of english words, and particularly those of a perjorative nature, comes to you absolutely free of charge.
It's no reason to defend the press either. Are they using his situation or are they reporting it honestly, without bias?
Are you hearing "just the facts, ma'am, just the facts"?
I don't think I'm "acting like a fool" to ask those questions.

I guess that explains why you got the name wrong in the third paragraph, huh?
I haven't defended the press.
I merely pointed out that for the last day or so since this story broke, there have been a lot of shameful remarks made about this man just because of who he is.
I wouldn't want anybody to speak that way about any of our soldiers over there or any of the reporters WE like, so I see no reason to stoop to the level of DU about Bob Woodruff.
I apologize for offending you or anyone on this board but I watched ABC World News last night to find more details on this story and the only new news that was shared is that Woodruff taught law in China. I just thought that was very odd. I am sorry to offend. I know he has a wife and is a father of 4.
I am praying for his recover as well as praying that God will give his wife and kids peace in this difficult time.
Lots of people go to places they think might be interesting to teach before they settle on their real jobs.
I don't think it is anymore than what's stated in the article.
