Our nation needs orderly and secure borders. (Applause.) To meet this goal, we must have stronger immigration enforcement and border protection.
My favorite line from Full Metal Jacket was, "You talk the talk. But can you walk the walk?"

They're concerned about unethical conduct by public officials
Clinton and Kennedy come to mind.

Kerry was panned and went into deep prayer (aka ducked) following the President saying, "...hindsight is not wisdom, second guessing is not a strategy."
He seemed to be saying quite clear that complaining for the sake of nothing else to offer undermined our troops and overall efforts in the WOT. It was very well done, tactfully, but without a doubt what he meant and for whom it was needed said.
The FOX camerman knew darn well who it was about and went right there.

"In a complex ad challenging time, the road of isolationism and protectionism may seem broad and inviting -- yet it ends in danger and decline."
So the first 170 protectionism-laden years of our country consisted of decline? And what's the danger? That China will lose the ability to smash us in 20 years? I noticed the typical lumping of isolationism with protectionism when they are two seperate animals. This country has been involved in international matters during both protectionist and free-trade periods.

Yet liberty is the future of every nation in the Middle East, because liberty is the right and hope of all humanity. (Applause.) My favorite, very Jeffersonian.

Technology and the spread of hate doctrines has made this a very different world.

Yeah, I was wondering why the president created this bogey man of protectionism/isolationism in his speech? He mentioned it, what, three times? As much as I'd like to, I don't see any threat of a return to isolationism/protectionism.

And we can tackle this problem together, if you pass the line-item veto. That's nice, but the Contract With America Congress did pass a line item veto, and the SCOTUS said no.

Oh, thought crimes.
I don't think is is a "Crime" to spread hate. But when the purveyors of these hate doctrines convince others that entire races of people DESERVE to be killed and some act on that, I suspect a crime might be committed.

Thank you. Ever since Clinton, I've realized the SOTU address is more digestible when read rather than watched. I don't need the long applause breaks or the dog-and-pony elements. I just want the meat and potatoes of the speech - this saves time.
BTW, I thought the line item veto was already law and wondered why Bush wasn't using it. I thought it passed while Clinton was still president.

There was also the same attempt to lump legal and illegal immigration. Not going to work.

I wondering what message Bush was sending when he spoke to the Iranians.
At a minimum he invited the Iranians to overthrow the mullahs.
