ABC NOW FEARING A MASS TUNEOUT (The Brokeback Oscars Effect)
NY Post ^ | 2/1/06 | DON KAPLAN

Posted on 02/01/2006 2:38:50 AM PST by jimbo123

"Brokeback Mountain" and a slew of other arty, less-widely seen Oscar-nominated flicks are expected to take the polish off ABC's ratings for the Academy Awards this year.

With no big-budget films like "Titanic," "Gladiator" or "Lord of the Rings: Return of the King" in this season's crop of nominees, ABC may be staring down the barrel of one of the lowest-rated Oscar telecasts in recent memory when it airs on March 5, say TV-industry analysts.

Watched too many horror movies. I'd have to fake it...and he'd know it, but enjoy it anyway!

They say the Cato the Censor (a self-righteous prig of a man in many ways) felt it beneath his stoic sensiblities to hug his wife. But he loved thunderstorms, because she would run to him and wrap her arms around him in fear of the storms.

Or so he believed about her...

ABC is part of Disney, they are a MAJOR player in Hollywierd. The leftists out there made a decision a long time ago to promote agendas that are completely at odds with the values of regular Americans. Now they worry that these decisions will result in lower revenues for them.

If Hollywood actually wants to return to the "good old days" and start making a lot of money, then maybe they should start making movies that they know will be blockbusters. "Red Dawn", the "Rambo" movies and other similar movies may have been "predicable" and they weren't "artistically cutting edge" or whatever Hollywierd is trying for these days, but they made piles of money. The reason they made money was because when people went to the theater to see them, they knew they would enjoy the movie, they knew the good guys would destroy the bad guys and they knew that their values wouldn't be offended.

I haven't watched the Academy Awards in over 10 years. It used to be a must see for me, now I don't even remember the exact day it comes on. I don't watch it for the same reason I don't watch Chris Matthews and 60 Minutes. If you want a reality check in the Entertainment field, you won't find it at the Oscars.

I expect the Oscars to be the butt of a lot of jokes here.

They should broadcast something like "Gladiator" and say
that
"tonight's feature is pudding free".

Besides being a well-directed film with fantastic acting, Cinderella Man was also a tribute to the hard-working, never-say-die American spirit. There were also moral themes alluded to throughout (telling his child "we don't steal", showing the devout Irish-Catholics "praying for Jim", watching the priest thanking God when Braddock beats Baer, etc.), which is probably why the Academy dismissed it.

That scene when Braddock's mouthpiece is knocked out in the ring in the fight against Art Lasky is one of the most memorable scenes that I've ever seen in my life, and I'm a big fan of movies. The music, the flashbacks, the acting by Crowe, are all done to absolute perfection in that scene, which to me is a microcosm of that movie. I remember thinking to myself how'd I'd rather be anyone in the world than Art Lasky at that moment.

I saw this movie three(!) times in movie theatres with my wife, and we got choked up each time we saw it. I bought it on DVD as soon as it came out. I haven't seen a film this well done ignored by the Academy since Carlito's Way back in the early '90's, though this film had much more powerful moral overtones.

Instead of watching the Oscars, save your energy and go to San Francisco for the Gay Pride Parade. You'll see the same freaks.

These categories are usually voted on by the technicians and who knows what politics are involved.

I have a relative who won an Oscar for a technical catagory in the mid 70's. From the way I understand it, he gets a ballot for the catagory he won in and best picture (everyone votes for best picture). I think he told me that is the way voting works for all the technical catagories. I don't know about the acting catagories.

I agree with you. At the absolute very least Russell Crowe should have been nominated for best actor and Ron Howard for best director.

I cried through that whole movie. The scenes of the depression were gut wrenching.

I hope that so few people watch the Oscars that the advertisers sue the Oscar organizers.

They could then both implode and quit the pretense that anyone besides proponents of the "gay" agenda watched BBM.

Shades of Leni whatever her name is. The Nazi propaganda film maker.

Oscars should be renamed to Brokeback Ratings.

Hey you know Emeril is really funny, especially when he talks about kicking it "up a notch", and everyone yells BAM! It's really interesting to watch him cook, unless you're hungry...

What is ABC?

I thought an Oscar was a fish or some kind of SoCal sushi.

There must be nervous sheep on Butcrack Mountain.

If THEY called it an homage, they didn't see it either, and were just bullcritting.

Aren't they having a "Life of Snails" documentary on the Discovery channel that night?

It's supposed to be one of the highest watched segment Discovery has ever aired.

I can say for sure I will boycott the Oscars. With these films and Jon Stewart as MC you can bet it will be Bush bashing festival. Hollywood is out in left field big time. None of the films nominated did especially well at the box office. Theater attendance is down big time. I wonder why? Perhaps the public has nothing in common with the agenda driven hollwood fools.

"I'd have to fake it..."

It's not about YOUR needs.

"and he'd know it, but enjoy it anyway!"

We are talking about a movie, right?
