ABC NOW FEARING A MASS TUNEOUT (The Brokeback Oscars Effect)
NY Post ^ | 2/1/06 | DON KAPLAN

"Brokeback Mountain" and a slew of other arty, less-widely seen Oscar-nominated flicks are expected to take the polish off ABC's ratings for the Academy Awards this year.

With no big-budget films like "Titanic," "Gladiator" or "Lord of the Rings: Return of the King" in this season's crop of nominees, ABC may be staring down the barrel of one of the lowest-rated Oscar telecasts in recent memory when it airs on March 5, say TV-industry analysts.

...and you know something? I still don't care. I don't read a lot of actor interviews or watch much TV. The only way I learn the politics of an actor is from FR. And I really like movies, but I do believe that actors, like many creative people, put the best of what they have into their work. Everything else is kind of a non-starter.

LOL, count me in. On the tune out, that is.

But I do like to watch the scathing commentary on what the 'stars' are wearing. ;-)

I'm sorry, I just don't understand that. If the performances are good, don't they stand by themselves? Clift's been dead for forty years - whatever he was or wasn't, it's long since over.

If it really bothers you to think Monty Clift was gay, then don't think of him that way. He was a great actor. And if he was, how would that make him left-wing? I have no idea what his politics were.

I just pulled what I could find with a three-minute google; some references are better than others, and wikipedia, I agree, is pretty useless. If you want to google him yourself, you'll find many, many others.

If you love Monty and his sexuality actually matters, I suggest you never see him in "Suddenly, Last Summer". I don't think you'd do too well with THAT movie. ;-D

That is a terrific idea. While the Oscars are on everyone not interested in Hollywood's charade can participate in an alternative over the Internet perhaps on Free Republic. Lets put together how own award show on the net for the best films. This would come from real people, Americans would made the box office winners successful. Screw Hollywood!

You must not have cable. They run "Ice Station Zebra" so much your eyes will bleed. And I guarantee you that one of the Rock and Doris movies is on, on some cable systems, even as we speak. I saw a little of "Send Me No Flowers" last Sunday afternoon, and that soppy movie where he causes and cures Jane Wyman's blindness, the week before that. You can't really believe that Rock Hudson movies have disappeared!

How about an award to compete against the Oscars aired at the same time?

I vote for "The Real Oscar Awards By Real People not Wackos "

You're not alone in this, by any means. A good performance is a good performance. I seem to have ruined Monty Clift for someone this afternoon, but I think he's great.

"...Cinderella Man didn't get any nods this year."

Thanks for the reminder...I knew there was a supposedly-terrific movie I was missing in my Netflix queue! :)

He still deserves to win and "Capote" is definitely the best picture of the five nominated.

Brokeback or no Brokeback, I wouldn't watch the Oscars. The Hollywood crowd gets too much attention as it is, and I will not support their liberal agenda by tuning in. As a matter of fact, if I had to choose between watching the Oscars and cleaning a room full of litter boxes, I'd choose the litter patrol.

I don't blame Christians for not seeing "End of the Spear"...hardly any theaters were showing it. I blame the big theater chains. I took a bunch of people to see it and we had to go to a really crappy theater.
