Heck, I thought the good news was going to be that someone wiped Iran off the face of the earth.
Watch that. The Iranians want freedom just as much as anyone.
I guess they just don't know how to go about getting it.
Some of them may. But over the last 25 years I've seen video footage and pictures of vile, angry throngs of them calling for "Death to America", burning our flag, kidnapping and killing our people, hijacking our planes and boats, feeding the Iraqi insurgency and giving a great deal of help to international terrorism. If the Iranian people in general were against this sort of thing I don't see how all of this could happen for so long and with such great frequency. Islam has always been a threat to the rest of the world and Iran is no exception.
Freeper freedom44 has pictures of a candlelight vigil that was held in Iran immediately after September 11th, in honor of the US terror victims. It is really moving to see the photos.

Are you sure? I meet plenty of people here in these United States who have no use for real freedom and, in fact, consider me a nut case when I try to awaken them to the fact that much of our precious freedom is already lost. Too many people are all for their own definition of freedom which bears little resemblance to the freedom for which our forefathers pledged their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor. Real freedom involves huge responsibilities and many only want to pay lip service to it while being delivered from the real thing.
We saw the same thing with the Iraqis. Saddam was always voted back in office, etc. It's amazing how many people will "turn out" to chant "death to America" when they fear for their jobs, their lives or the lives of those they love. There is nothing like a Dictator and his Shredding machine to motivate folks to show their support openly.
I imagine it's different when you've never known liberty. You get 70% voter turnout, purple fingers, that sort of thing.
Hey, you can do whatever you want to in America....as long as you buy a permit.
Thank you. Sorry for the ignorance. *shaking head*
I think that it would be fair to say that "some" Iranians want freedom.

Most things now done with a permit were done in the past without a permit, of course things are wonderamously better now that we can spend money on a permit. The permits that really count are the special exemptions that can only be obtained by those who have money and friends in high (or low depending on your vantage point) places.

I'll go along with that.
IMO, there is no point in negotiations or discussions with Ahmadi and his gang. You can't reason or negotiate with terrorists, isn't that what our politicians tell us too?
A far more effective way to address this 'end of the world' saga, which has created so much fear, is to help facilitate regime change in Iran. IMO, the U.S. needs to support regime change in Iran and not only or necessarily thru a military strike. It is up to the Military strategists to work out the best plan with most efficient and effective results, which can be implemented in a relatively short period of time. Prior planning is a key element, so is the surprise element.
News coming out of Iran strongly indicates that, at least, 80% of population are against this theocracy and want a secular, democratic regime. We don't hear about this in the mainstream media. What we DO see is the mainstream media promptly give large scale coverage to rent-a-crowd Mullah gang when they sing "Death to America". Why don't the mainstream western media expose the 'other' side of the story?
The regime brutally suppresses any demonstrations in Iran by any group including students. Most of the leaders who organise demonstrations against the regime in Iran are in jail or are executed. Students are attacked at night or when they least expect. There are THOUSANDS of students and ordinary civilians in notorious prisons in Iran. They are tortured and silenced. This is what should be covered in the Western Media but it isn't! The latest silence from Western Media was about the striking bus drivers and how their children and wives were beaten and abused. This has nothing to do with idiotic utterances about Mehdi by Admadinejad. It is a diversion, IMO, to further kill innocent Iranians who aren't infidels either! (Eventhough am sure the Mullahs will find a way to twist matters and justify their actions on this issue as well).
Regime change in Iran to a secular, democracy is critical. It will significantly contribute to the elimination of radical fundamentalist Islam in the region and around the world. It will stop Mullahs' financial and moral support to groups such as HAMAS. Regime change in Iran must happen sooner than later. But, I am hoping that the West has a sense of timing and a solid strategy and plan to deal with it. And this strategy and plan should not be a debate on Islam or its derivatives with Mullahs either - that, IMO, will be absolutely useless.
I am for freedom everywhere, Iran included. But there are too many muslims there and our ideologies will never do anything but clash.
"East is east and never the twain shall meet".
Don't ask me for a solution, I don't have one. Other than destroying the enemy before the enemy destroys us.
"Other than destroying the enemy before the enemy destroys us."
Agreed.
I also think that the most effective way of destroying an enemy is going for the locus/source of the problem.
The locus, is this case, being those who incite violence and instil fear in others by using various ideologies as a tool or vehicle. Be it east or west.
Unless, because of ideological differences, we propose to commit mass genocide. That wouldn't make us very intelligent and certainly wouldn't differentiate us from those we hate.
