AT&T (T) is slashing its monthly fee for high-speed Internet access to an all-time low: $12.99.
The telecom company had been charging $14.95 a month for its lowest-priced digital subscriber line plan. The new deal, which goes into effect Friday, is aimed at customers who sign up online. It requires a one-year contract.

Still won't do us any good out here in the sticks, but I am happy for those who can benefit :-)

AT&T's $12.99-a-month customers will get Internet speeds ranging from 384 kilobits to 1.5 megabits per second. AT&T will sell a higher-speed service ranging from 1.5 to 3 megabits per second for $17.99.I could live with that. Unfortunately I'm in one of those areas served by Podunk Telephone Company.

SBC must have completed most of the DSLAM upgrades recently. Given they've merged with AT&T to form the "new" AT&T, this explains why we're getting a lot of cheap DSL offers for SBC/Yahoo! DSL service lately.
Mind you, this is actually great because frankly, once you go even to 1.5 megabits/second broadband you'll NEVER go back to dial-up connections ever again.

Pfft. I'm still paying almost $40.00 per month for DSL from Verizon.

Still won't do us any good out here in the sticks Don't feel bad -- there are still plenty of places in even Silicon Valley where the existing phone wiring is so outmoded that DSL isn't available.

I dont use my phone line for POTS. Can I still get this service?

Same here, but I'm not complaining right now as I got 6 months credit when I upgraded to 768/3.0 because of all the trouble it caused me trying to keep a connection for longer than 5 mins at a time.

Of course you have to pay for a conventional analog line too. Why should it be necessary to have any kind of analog phone line anymore. They'd actually get better quality if they delivered voice over the DSL using an IP based phone system similar to the one Vonage sells.

Mine doesn't either, but I am paying 52.00 (stationed overseas and just glad to have it.) It is nice to know when I get back it will be cheaper to have DSL though.

I've had SBC DSL since 1998. Last August they called and asked if I would like to sign up for the newer faster DSL X! I said yes but they couldn't make it happen. the Customer Service Rep called and explained that the cables leading to my house couldn't support the higher speed. He did note that I was paying the older rate of $49.95/mo and made a rate adjustment so that I would pay the new $19.95/month rate.
I've been watching the line trucks as they worked in my area and the 1st week in January they called again and said that now I could have the faster service. Jan 13th was the switchover date and at the $14.95 rate I'm getting the higher data rate!!!!!

I've got a package from SBC that for 75 bucks I get DSL, unlimited long distance, call waiting, forwarding, etc. I don't really know the exact price of my DSL.

Nor does mine anymore. It was just during the transition period when Verizon was upgrading everything. Probably shouldn't say this but it's been almost a year since I had a connection problem, but that first 2-3 months of trouble after the upgrade from 1.5 to 3.0 was living h**l.

Mind you, this is actually great because frankly, once you go even to 1.5 megabits/second broadband you'll NEVER go back to dial-up connections ever again. We've had DSL at the office since the summer of 2000. The company I work for was one of the first in my city to get DSL installed. SBC has upgraded the level of service at the same prices several times. The only problem I have is that it is assymetrical bandwidth. This makes it impractical to use the outgoing signal to set up mirror drives for my data across the internet. Also, I lack the bandwith to be able to host video conferencing sessions. We're considering upgrading to a higher speed symmetric internet connection using fiber that comes to our building.

My first ISP was AOL. What a POS.

Actually, many flavors of DSL include an analog line as part of the package, not sure where ATT is on this but I wouldn't be surprised if it did as well.
The reason many cannot get DSL is the distance from the CO.
At 24K Feet, I am way outside the service area and have little choice but Comcast Cable at 4 to 6 MB/S.
It screams, but...Nearly $50 bucks a month.
Fiber is on the pole down the street and competition is on the way and I shall ditch Comcast in favor of the competition that offers 10 MB/S, digital cable and 2 phone lines for 9$90 bucks which I think is a deal.
Cheers,

That's why I refuse to get suckered into on of these cheap one or two month deals.

Glad to see you recovered. Your nightmare must have been as bad as mine. Only thing I use AOH**L discs for is to hang in the trees to keep the birds off the fruit.
