Merkel likens Iranian president to Hitler

MUNICH, Feb 4 (Reuters) - Chancellor Angela Merkel likened hardline Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to Adolf Hitler on Saturday, saying the world must act now to stop him before his country developed a nuclear bomb.

Referring to the rise of Hitler in the 1930s, Merkel added: "Now we see that there were times when we could have acted differently. For that reason Germany is obliged ... to make clear (to Iran) what is permissible and what isn't."

Europe and the United States suspect Iran of planning to build nuclear weapons. Tehran says its nuclear programme is purely for civilian energy purposes.

The United Nations nuclear watchdog, the Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), is expected to vote to report Iran to the U.N. Security Council later on Saturday over suspicions it is seeking atomic bombs.

Merkel, speaking to an audience that included U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, had particularly harsh words for Ahmadinejad, who has called for Israel to be "wiped off the map".

"Iran has blatantly crossed the red line," Merkel said. "I say it as German chancellor. A president that questions Israel's right to exist, a president that denies the Holocaust, cannot expect to receive any tolerance from Germany."

Wow. Bloody wow.
It did take a conservative to say it though. Can't imagine that shill Schroeder saying anything remotely this straightforward.
War is upon us, citizens of the free world.

Absolutely correct.

Look which "guilty dog" barks first.

The utter hypocracy of Merkin is amazing.

Germany has been blatant in supplying arms and nuclear wherewithal to Islamo-facist countries all along.

I agree; a good sign from Chancellor Merkel.

Incorrect in almost every respect.

There is literally no comparison.

History books can help here.

Which chapter do you suggest I read? The one about the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem aligning himself and the Arab world with Adolph Hitler, seeking asylum in Berlin, raising a brigade of fanatical Balkan Muslims as a unit within the Nazi SS, and barely escaping war crimes trials for Nazi collusion? Don't forget that chapter.

The subject was "comparisons".

What does this reply have to do with the price of rice?

I would start your search for comparisons here: Paxton, Robert O., The Anatomy of Fascism. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 2004.

I think you mischaracterizing Merkel.
She & her party took office by a very slim margin. (I believe she had to put leftists in her cabinet!)
In a parliamentary system her actual ability to wield authority is limited. She will have to tread lightly & be subtle in her manipulation of the levers of power that a German chancellor has at his/her disposal. Hopefully she can gain more authority as time goes on. Much of what you are complaining about was going on under previous German governments it will take time for her to stop it. Also you know what she may fail !

Why don't you at least try to get her name right before you unfairly criticize her. The woman has been German Chancellor for only a few months. She cannot immediately fix all the damage that was done in seven years by Schroeder. As time has gone on she has consistantly proved that she is a true change for Schroeder and a true ally to the US and the cause of freedom. Her statements today are a great example of this.

Merkel is quickly becoming the new leader and the new voice of Europe, and I like the voice that I am hearing.

It appears that I spoke out in ignorance about Chancellor Merkel not realizing that she may represent a new force for better understanding between our nations.
Nonetheless, the Germans have literally miles to go to compensate for their profligacy as far as terror -sponsoring nations are concerned and their legendary
contempt for all things US.
Forgive me for not gushing all over Ms. Merkel, but this is not heaven and she has her work in front of her.

It's very hard to overstate the importance of these comments. It's a political message with a lot of umph meant for the rest of the world, the UN, and in particular, Iran, Israel and the US.

This is a tacit green light for military strikes against Iran.
