GENEVA, February 3 (Itar-Tass) -- Sukhumi will view the possible international recognition of independent Kosovo as another argument in favor of the international recognition of independent Abkhazia, Abkhaz Foreign Minister Sergei Shamba hinted in an interview with Itar-Tass.
The minister led the Abkhaz delegation to the Geneva meeting of the Friends to Georgia Group.
“Certainly, we need a precedent. Although, I must say that there have been a lot of precedents,” he said.
“Many countries have recently come into being, and many will, because this is a natural historical process. It was and will be this way. It would be naпve to say that this process can allegedly stop in Georgia,” Shamba said.
The minister gave a number of arguments in favor of the recognition of independent Abkhazia. “Our democratization is much better than it is in Kosovo, and this is confirmed by independent observers. The return of refugees is also much more successful,” Shamba said.
There are legal arguments in favor of independent Abkhazia, he added. Abkhazia became a part of Georgia in the Stalin period, and this factor became invalid with the disintegration of the former Soviet Union, he said. “Speaking of history and comparing us with Kosovo, we have absolutely different arguments. Our state existed in the Middle Ages,” he said.
“When they speak of the possible recognition of independent Kosovo and claim that independent Abkhazia cannot be recognized, this is evidently unfair,” Shamba said. This is an example of double standards, “as the right of peoples to self-determination is a fundamental principle of the United Nations,” he said.
