MARION - For the second time in a week, a Marion teacher has turned himself in to the Marion Police Department for a committing a sex crime against a minor female student.
Mathew W. Croshaw, 35, who teaches theater arts at Marion High School, was charged Friday with one count of committing a lewd act on a minor younger than age 16 in connection with an incident that reportedly occurred two years ago when the victim was 14.
Croshaw, who is from North Carolina, moved to Marion County three years ago to teach at the high school.
Croshaw was released after his arrest Friday on a $25,000 surety bond and under the conditions that he would make no contact with the victim, the victim's family or the high school.
Croshaw was given permission by Marion City Recorder William Seals Jr., who served as judge, to attend his great aunt's funeral in Tennessee on Sunday.
Seals, who is a practicing attorney in Marion, told Croshaw he must return home Monday and then stay in South Carolina.
Police Chief Willie Smith told Croshaw to call the police department as soon as he returns from Tennessee.
Croshaw's arrest comes only two days after former Marion High School football standout Shawn Graves, 34, turned himself in on two counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor. Graves, who teachers social studies at the high school where he also coaches, has been suspended with pay pending further investigation.
Graves has posted a $50,000 surety bond. He was still being held Friday at the Marion County Detention Center, however, on bench warrants for nonpayment of child support in Greenville County, according to James Woods, owner of Woods Bail and Bonds in Marion.
