Two Jordan editors are arrested
Protests against Denmark have spread to many Muslim countries
Two Jordanian newspaper editors who published cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad have been arrested. Jihad Momani and Hisham Khalidi are accused of insulting religion under Jordan's press and publications law.
Mr Momani was fired from the weekly Shihan after reproducing the cartoons - originally printed in Denmark - which have caused a global storm of protest.
One of the cartoons depicts Muhammad as a terrorist. Any images of the Prophet are banned under Islamic tradition.
'Abuse of freedom'
Mr Momani's arrest came earlier on Saturday, a day after Jordanian King Abdullah condemned the cartoons as an unnecessary abuse of freedom of speech.
Mr Momani's paper, Shihan, had printed three of the cartoons, alongside an editorial questioning whether the angry reaction to them in the Muslim world was justified.
"Muslims of the world be reasonable," wrote Mr Momani.
"What brings more prejudice against Islam, these caricatures or pictures of a hostage-taker slashing the throat of his victim in front of the cameras or a suicide bomber who blows himself up during a wedding ceremony in Amman?"
Mr Khalidi, whose al-Mehwar newspaper had also reprinted the cartoons, was detained late on Saturday. Al-Mehwar had reproduced the cartoons over a week ago to accompany an article on the condemnation they had sparked.
Apology
In a public letter of apology after his sacking, Mr Momani said he did not mean to cause offence, Reuters news agency reported.
Arab Printers Company, the publisher of Shihan, also withdrew copies of the popular tabloid from news stands across the country and promised tough moves against those involved.
The drawings have sparked protests in countries including Indonesia, Iraq, Turkey and Egypt.
A number of European newspapers have printed the cartoons, but the Jordanian paper was believed to be the first in a Muslim country to do so.
Freedom and Islam. Now there's an oxymoron.
In light of these recent developments in the art community, I don't see how any artist can pass up the world-wide publicity that would be created with a "Piss Mohammed" exhibit. Instant fame!
Is a cartoon going to be the catalyst that prompts Muslims to show their true intentions toward the rest of humanity?
Uh, I thought the cartoons were meant to show how perverted and crazy Muhammed's followers have become. I guess they were right on the money.
So much for our good friend the King of Jordan, and his "rapprochment" with modern society.
More taqyyia.
More people fired for reproducing cartoons.
Speaking of...I've not seen them (cartoons) yet...have you?
I've only seen the cartoon that began the whole mess. Allah with the dynamite stick coming out of his head.
On a blog the other day, it was reported that the jihadists are going around Denmark showing cartoons of Allah featured as a pig and other outrageous cartoons. The only problem is, the cartoons they are showing have never been published!
The jihadists must have drawn the more outrageous cartoons themselves and using them to incite hatred.
I've only seen the one legitimate cartoon, SE Mom.
How could anyone not know their true intentions by now? Good grief is the west that delusional??? Of course it is. And it will be until we loose a city. And there will be he!! to pay because we waited.
According to the American Thinker article, this is exactly what was done.
Since then a small delegation of Muslim religious leaders who reside in Denmark have been on a tour of various Muslim states in order to bring attention to this fairly straightforward case. Unfortunately they did not stop at the facts.
Disinformation was fabricated in order to characterize the Danish population and government as fiercely anti-Muslim. Several new drawings were added likening Muhammed to a pig, as well as statements to the effect that Danish citizens were under the impression that the Prophet was a violent pedophile. ~~snip~~Throughout all of this, several of the religious leaders responsible for the disinformation, had been feeding sweet words of reason to the Danish press with one hand and more disinformation to the Arab press with the other
And the original Danish caricatures were published back in Sept 2005. They sure waited several months to get all worked up, didn't they. (rolling eyes)
