Frist says military action a posssibility against Iran

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist said Saturday night that the United States must be prepared to take military action against Iran if nonviolent means don't deter the country from building nuclear weapons.

Iran has said it wants to enrich uranium only to make nuclear fuel for generating electricity. But concerns that it might misuse the technology led the International Atomic Energy Agency on Saturday to report Iran to the U.N. Security Council.

The United States has long advocated Security Council action against Iran, including possible political and economic sanctions, which have not yet occurred.

Asked whether Congress had the political will to use military force against Iran if necessary, First said: "The answer is yes, absolutely."

"We cannot allow Iran to become a nuclear nation," Frist told reporters at the Missouri GOP's annual Lincoln Days conference. "We need to use diplomatic sanctions. If that doesn't work, economic sanctions, and if that doesn't work, the potential for military use has to be on the table."

Frist also defended a program in President Bush's administration that allowed the government to eavesdrop, without warrants, on international calls and e-mails in the United States that were believed to be terrorist-related.

As Senate majority leader, the Tennessee senator said he was one of eight people in Congress who were "fully briefed" on the program. He said Democrats who criticize it do so at their own political peril.

"The program is constitutional, it is lawful and it is absolutely imperative for the safety and security of people in Missouri and people around this country," Frist said.

Don't tell me, let me guess what will happen. The 'rats will vote for military action on Iran, then blame Bush for starting the whole thing all by himself. I can see it coming sure as the sun crosses the sky every day.

This time I see Israel addressing the issue and after Europe follows we will step in. We can't always be first in line...

They'll vote to give it to him and if it goes well they'll say they insisted he do it. If it goes sour, they'll say they only voted for him to look into the possibility of attacking them.

For the most part I think the average Iranian is a pretty good person. I have a lot of former Iranian nationals as friends. They have a lot of family back there. I agree we should seriously consider using military force against Iran. But considering the possibilities, I suggest we nuke Damascus as a start. That might just change the whole picture and clean up a garbage dump at the same time.

I don't think Europe will do anything but condemn Israel for acting against Iran.

"The Dems of my parents generation no longer exist."

They are America hating Marxist/Socialists for the most part today. The conservative Dems who vote Republican should join the party because the Rat party has left them.

"I suggest we nuke Damascus as a start."

Followed closely by Riyadh and then Mecca.

"Can you hear me now?"

>>>I think these guys will go in first.<<<

Getting a group of Arab countries to act in concert is at least as difficult as herding cats. I doubt that they will act - much less effectively - together.

However - It would be nice if they took care of the problem themselves.

I think it more likely Iran will self distruct. Read FR post "Tehran's Killing Fields (talk about your offensive images)".

Be sure to read it to the end....if accurate (a big if), Iran is in very dicey shape and could be pushed into chaos. If that can happen before they get a nuke....so much the better.

The MSM loves to characterize this surveillance as "domestic spying".

If Iran is attacked, does this mean we free Iran? I sure like to see Iran free. Iran before 1979 was different. It was one of the most developed Middle Eastern nation besides Israel and Iraq.
