President Bush spent the weekend in the warm winter sunshine at his Texas ranch, where he rode his bike, entertained friends and cleared his head. It had been a long week: the State of the Union address on Tuesday, then trips to pitch his "American competitiveness initiative" in Tennessee, Minnesota, New Mexico and Texas from Wednesday to Friday.
Most of what Mr. Bush said was the CliffsNotes version of the State of the Union speech for local television markets. But he also wandered into an aside about why math and science students should not think of themselves as the "nerd patrol," declared once again that his foreign policy was in part based on an "Almighty" whose gift to the world was freedom, and mused about his age.
"I'm a bike guy, and I like to plug in music on my iPod when I'm riding along to hopefully help me forget how old I am," Mr. Bush said at the 3M headquarters near St. Paul on Thursday. It was a thought much like one he cheerfully shared with a crowd in Kansas last month: "It's kind of like my knees are like tires, you know, and they're bald."
Five years into his presidency, and now five months shy of his 60th birthday, the state of Mr. Bush's state of mind seems to be a sense of contentment about the present and some apprehension about his post-White House future.

Elizabeth is just pathetic.
I would LOVE to see George Bush teaching political science at the university level. He would counter the typical lefty mindset present amongst the academia.
It's difficult to imagine ''pathetic'' being a descriptively inadequate adjective, but that word certainly is inadequate here.
Wow, there really wasn't a lot of information/evidence in that article that meshed w/ the headline. Does that happen often w/ the NY Times? (eyes rolling)
How pathetic to harp on President Bush's age, but considering the source it isn't surprising.
Oh please .. I also don't see Barbara calling Bill son and giving him a hug
His Dad does just that at the Bush graduate school of public service at Texas A&M, where his library is.
This is just pathetic beyond belief. If I have a newspaper stand, I will put the New York Times in the same section of those tabloid supermarket magazines, and even so I will still be giving them too much credibility by doing so.
Betsy, if anyone should be concerned about their age, it should be you, didn't you just turn 103? You sure look like it!
For guy who going turn 60 Elizabeth he still look good
Unlike previous occupant of WH OMG Clinton look awful
THAT's what I WAS thinking!!!.....pot..kettle...black...she's ALWAYS been so wrinkly....
Actually, I had her mixed up with another "journalist"....Elisabeth does not look that bad....so I apologize.
What a silly tw*t.
Why bother repeating anything produced by the NYT?
IIRC this is the woman who was genuinely startled that an objective piece about Iraq would mean writing something positive about the US military.
"You mean you want me to write .... ".
Don't have time to dig up the specific reference but it's here on FR.
