The cartoon was disgracefully insensitive. It depicted a barbed wire Star of David in which innocent Palestinian men, women and children were trapped. By the time it appeared in the Seattle Times in July 2003, hundreds of Israeli civilians had been mercilessly slaughtered by Palestinian terrorists in what they call the "second intifada." But compared to what is typically found in the Arab press, cartoonist Tony Auth's effrontery was fairly bland.
Arab political "humor" knows no bounds. A cartoon in Qatar's Al-Watan depicted Prime Minister Ariel Sharon drinking from a goblet of Palestinian children's blood. Another, in the Egyptian Al-Ahram al-Arabi showed him jackbooted, bloody-handed and crushing peace.
Arab cartoonists routinely demonize Jews as global conspirators, corrupters of society and blood-suckers. Just this Saturday, Britain's Muslim Weekly published a caricature of a hooked-nose Jew - Ehud Olmert.
And it's not just cartoons. During Ramadan 2002, an Egyptian satellite television channel broadcasted the multi-episode Horseman Without a Horse series based on the Protocols of the Elders of Zion canard.
How did Israel and world Jewry respond? The Israeli embassy in Cairo filed a protest. A US student group held an orderly demonstration outside an Egyptian consulate, and Jewish leaders sent a strongly-worded letter to the Mubarak government.
Contrast this with the frenzied Muslim reaction to 12 cartoons, including one depicting the Prophet Muhammad wearing a bomb-shaped turban which appeared in the Danish newspaper Jyllands Posten five months ago and was recently widely disseminated. It was intended, paradoxically, to satirize Muslim intolerance.

The Islamics are setting themselves up for a big fall. I think Western public opinion has been out on Islam, but with Iran, the election of Hamas in the face of the Gaza withdrawal, and this absurd cartoon thing, I think Western public opinion is beginning to gel in the extreme negative.
"It was intended, paradoxically, to satirize Muslim intolerance."
This is one amazing part of the story. Muslims whine about being portrayed as angry, violent, and intolerant and what is the first thing they do when they see something they don't like in a minor publication? The react by being angry, violent, and intolerant. They can't see the irony at all.
" I think Western public opinion is beginning to gel in the extreme negative. "
Even some of the whiny liberals I work with seem to be seeing the light after this. I think that cartoon-gate is really transforming the opinions of a lot of people who are paying attention. Its hard after following this story and the election of Hamas to still see Islam as a religion of peace, or the Islamic world as a modern area that can be reasoned with. I think this has opened a lot of eyes.
You would like to think so. However I am so skeptical of Western European resolve and U.S. resolve on the part of our RAT B@ST@RD COWARDLY POLITICIANS that I think most of these politicians are just hoping & waiting for this to slowly ebb out of the public's awareness, especially if they offer enough soft, fuzzy appeals for calm & "respect for Muslim religious beliefs" and apologies up the gazoo. If necessary they can always drop their insistence that Hamas reject their promotion of terrorism and destruction of Israel, and throw in some more billions of dollars to placate the Muslim terrorist inflamed masses.
Appeasement will go on for awhile. The politicians are almost always behind the curve, we're way past the point of painting a happy face on this stuff and forgetting it. The situation with Iran, Hamas, and Islam is only going to get hotter.
Even if these events you correctly put together regarding the Koranimals doesn't gel public opinion, we can actually measure the increased volume of words expressing doubt of Islam's claims to being civilized and peaceful.
I'm going to do some research...
