Killings at cartoon protests

Muslim demonstrators clashed with security forces who fired live rounds and tear gas to break up violent protests in several Asian countries Monday against the publication of caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad.

Four people were killed and at least 19 wounded in Afghanistan.

The worst of the violence was outside Bagram, the main US base in the country, with Afghan police firing on 2,000 protesters as they tried to break into the heavily guarded facility.

Two of the demonstrators were killed and five wounded, while eight police were also hurt.

In the central Afghan city of Mihtarlam, police fired on the demonstrators after a man shot at them and others threw stones and knives.

Two protesters were killed, and three other people wounded - two of them police, one of whom was stabbed by a thrown knife. Protesters burned tires and threw stones at the offices of the police and provincial governor.

Meanwhile, about 200 protesters tried to break down the gate of a the Danish government's diplomatic mission office in the capital Kabul, but failed, said police who were guarding the building.

In Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim nation, police fired warning shots to stop protesters from ripping a plaque from the wall of the US consulate in Surabaya, the country's No2 city. This came after people stoned the Danish consulate in the city.

Muslim anger at the publication of the cartoons was at first directed at Denmark, where they were first printed in a newspaper in September. Danish missions have been attacked and boycotts of Danish products launched in many Muslim countries.

Denmark's Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen has said he disapproves of the caricatures but insisted he cannot apologize on behalf of his country's independent press.

The cartoons have since been reprinted in Europe, the United States and elsewhere - sometimes to illustrate stories about the controversy but also by some who say they have done so to support free speech.

Islamic tradition bars any depiction of the prophet to prevent idolatry.

One of the drawings shows Muhammad with a turban shaped as a bomb. Another has him with a sword, his eyes covered by a black rectangle.

Many Muslims have been upset by the insinuation that Muhammad was a terrorist - a sensitive topic because of bombings that have been carried out in the name of Islam in recent years.

Among other protests Monday, New Delhi police fired tear gas and water cannon to disperse hundreds of student protesters who burned Danish flags.

The main city in Indian-controlled Kashmir came to a standstill as shops, businesses and schools shut down in a one-day general strike to protest the caricatures. Dozens of protesters torched Danish flags, burned tires in several parts of Srinagar. Protesters also hurled rocks at passing cars, but no one was reported hurt.

In Bangkok, about 400 members of Thailand's Muslim minority shouted: "God is great" outside Denmark's embassy, and some demonstrators stomped on a Danish flag.

The editor editor of a Malaysian newspaper that ran one of the cartoons to accompany an article about the lack of impact of the controversy inside the country resigned. The Sunday Tribune in the country's Borneo state of Sarawak state apologized.

In Australia, Muslim leaders demanded that the News Corp-owned Courier-Mail, the biggest newspaper in the Queensland capital of Brisbane, apologize after becoming the first newspaper in Australia to publish one of the caricatures Saturday.

Also Monday, Lebanon apologized to Denmark after thousands of rampaging Muslim demonstrators set fire to its diplomatic mission in Beirut Sunday in some of the most violent of the escalating rage of Muslims.

Information Minister Ghazi Aridi said the government had unanimously "rejected and condemned the acts of riots ... that harmed Lebanon's reputation and its civilized image and the noble aim of the demonstration."

At least one person died, 30 were injured - half of them security officials - and about 200 people were detained. Prime Minister Fuad Saniora said the arrested included 76 Syrians, 35 Palestinians and 38 Lebanese.

In Europe, German Chancellor Angela Merkel called for an end to violence and Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said Berlin would try to use its contacts with Arab countries to cool the violence.

You can post these pictures too by copying the string above, and replacing the 'zzz' with '<' in the two strings. Use them in good health!

Thanks for these great pics....I have one complaint though historically, the pedophile prophet was far uglier than the image suggests....LOL.

This is how Muslims deal with something that they don't like or that calls their beliefs into question: no discussion or thoughtful consideration, no inclination to understand anything from the other perspective, no meeting anyone halfway. No, just violence, death, and revenge.

Don't they realize the huge gap between the standard line they continue to spew to an incredulous world ("Islam is the religion of peace") and then what they actually say and do ("We will kill those responsible for this blasphemy")?

You really have to be an idiot not to realize the extreme irony of what you're doing when you're running around making death threats, destroying embassies, and blowing things up, in your protest of some cartoons that point out Muhammad's endorsement of violence in his teachings. Way to prove the point of the cartoons, morons.

That would require more than one brain cell.

From another account:
"They want to test our feelings," protester Mawli Abdul Qahar Abu Israra told the BBC.
"They want to know whether Muslims are extremists or not. Death to them and to their newspapers," he said.
