 N. Korea: Armed Men Attack N. Korea's Tumen Border

It is revealed that, just before the Lunar New Year's Day, multiple (armed) attacks on border guard by unidentified men occurred along N. Korea's northern border area.

Especially, indications are that some of attackers were carrying automatic weapons and their movements are well-coordinated, leading us to wonder about their background.

Multiple Attacks: According to the sources on N. Korea, on the evening of Jan. 28, a border guard at Namyang Worker's District, Onsung County, N. Hamkyong Province, spotted a few men crossing Tumen River from Kai-san-tun area of China, and attempted to arrest them. A struggle erupted between the guard and the men, and the guard was dead with 38 stab wounds. In principle, two guards as a unit are to be stationed for duty, but the senior of the two went to the village for drinks and the dead guard was alone at the post, according to the report.

The noise of struggle tipped soldiers at the neighboring guard post a few hundred meters away, and the reinforcement came. A pursuit ensued. Feeling pressed, those unidentified attackers ditched their backpacks and escaped to China.

From the abandoned backpacks, three disassembled rifles, ammunition, a cam corder, and Chinese cell phones were recovered. It is not yet exactly known what type of rifles they carried.

Approximately the same time, at the Hoiryong City, 40km away from the site of the incident, unidentified men crossed the Tumen River and fired at a city street and borderguard barracks, and then hurried back to China. There were no return fires from N. Korean soldiers or N. Korean casualties, according to the source.

It is also revealed that similar shooting incidents occurred in Musan County and another location.

Organized Resistance by N. Korea Defectors?: Up to now, we had sporadic incidents of armed N. Korean soldiers crossing the border into China, and committed robbery(or banditry.) On Jan. 17, 8 armed N. Korea soldiers attacked Rang-sui Coal Mine at Tumen City, located in Yanbian Ethnic Korean Autonomous Area, in which one N. Korean soldier is killed and three were arrested. However, it is unprecedented that armed men sneaked into heavily guarded N. Korea and created shooting incidents. It would create serious repercussion.

N. Korean authorities suspect that a dissident group made up of N. Korean defectors are showing their presence through this cross-border raids, according to the source.

In Northern N. Korean area, a rumor is spreading fast, saying, 'They are the work of N. Korean defectors who went to the South.' This rumor says that N. Korean defectors who are not doing well in S. Korea are trying to break into N. Korea and record their actions in order to sell their footages to U.S.. Another rumor alleges that  some group is out to sabotage N. Korean-China relation after Kim Jong-il's visit to China.

N. Korean authorities declared the state of emergency and banned movement in this area on Jan. 24, due to Foot-and-Mouth disease since the end of last year in this area. The news of armed attacks compounded the tense atmosphere already triggered by the outbreak of Foot-and-Mouth disease.

The two spots marked with red characters and "explosion" symbol are the site of armed attacks. The top one is  for the stab attack at Namyang Worker's District, the one below for the shooting incident at Hoiryong City. The diagram in the box at the upper-left illustrates how the event at Namyang ensued

This could be the work of "Free North Korean Soldiers' Alliance." They declared their intention to pursue armed struggle against N. Korean regime last December. It is headed by former captain of N. Korean special forces, Lim Chang-yong(photo.) They had a press conference and published their open letter to challenge Kim Jong-il. They claimed that they had 20 members in S. Korea and abroad. All but him remain anonymous, as you can see the photo below. Since they have military background, many of them from NK special forces, they are familiar with N. Korean terrain, and can blend easily with local population. With their former training, they could be a major sore to N. Korean regime.

I wonder how Chinese allow this to happen. Apparently their staging area is inside China. Either China is acquiescing or they must have a really good underground network.

I had the same thought: Is Foot-and-mouth scare real or a excuse to lock down this restive area for an extended period of time?

Unfortunately, I cannot give you the definite answer.

I know people who have been to that river. It is described as gentle and easy to wade across, with gentle slopes and woods on the Chinese side, and fields on the NK side.

How does it look so far with support among S. Koreans? I saw a Korean movie called 2009: Lost Memories. It seems the belief among a lot of S. Koreans is that combinimg with the North is inevitable and for the best. A lot of other things seem to support that appearance. Is that how it is over there.

Now, who gets the reference?

Yes easily. The NK border with China is very long and quite mountainous. There is no realistic way to patrol it tightly. NK defectors fleeing famine conditions regularly escape into China over the mountains. Going the other way would be hard certainly, but does not require the approval of either government.

Re #15

The question is what kind of N. Korea S. Korea would join together. Many young people hate to unite with "poor" N. Korea regardless of who is in power. It is significant psychological component the S. Korean left exploit to sell their "appeasement" policy. That is, appeasement would keep those hungry N. Koreans from overrunning the South.

Movie industry in S. Korea is dominated by useful idiots and some hardcore lefties who try to present unification in a naive romantic fashion, burying all ugly truths about N. Korea. Movie crowds are disappointment all over the world.

Possibly this is NKPA deserters who were told to do it or be shot by the Chinese, who are sending a message about something or other.

The Chinese govt. was not happy several years ago when NKPA indiscipline reached the point where its conscripts took weapons off base and across the Yalu to rob banks in Manchuria. The Chinese had to send another 75,000 troops to the Yalu to stop that.

Or it could be that this is purely a North Korean affair that is being blamed on foreigners.

I wouldn't be surprised if several hundred thousand Chinese "fraternal humanitarian aid volunteers" cross the Yalu at some point to prevent advancing American and ROK forces from finding the evidence of Chinese aid to NK nuclear proliferation.

They may have a disproportionate effect in a country with conditions as bad as North Korea. If the people get hungry enough the whole thing may snap with the right push.

If these people are truly disidents of that country, that will be the best way.

Right.

I suspect that reaching critical sites before Chinese do is one of the major problems Bush admin. is concerned about. It must be one of the reasons 3,000-strong special force unit reported in the media was created.

Interesting development. Especially so, since I dont recall hearing any reports from the "DPRK" relayed by our own media mentioning this incident.
One would think that this story might be twisted so as to in some way be a propaganda aid for Kim Jong Il.
Possibly more serious and therefore, too embarrassing?

Not a bad guess, but that was 6, going into the mountains.

Actually the reference was Seven Pillars of Wisdom, Lawrence of Arabia, referring to desert rather than mountains - hence the parentheses. The taking of Aqaba starts with 20 men making the desert trek north to raise the nearby tribes.

'They are the work of N. Korean defectors who went to the South...who are not doing well in S. Korea

Yeah, they went to the South and got excessively fat and rich, right? There were too many fine b*tches in the South, and the DPRK defectors couldn't handle it....They suffered there from shortages of TREE BARK SOUP. They felt lonely without snitches following them around all day...

Although I must say in all seriousness that something that surprised me in SK is how amazingly RESIGNED and COMPLACENT young people are there.

It's like they're EAGER to breathe in DPRK nerve gas, or something.

Read, "The Aquariums of Pyongyang". GREAT BOOK!
