Someone told me the fine in Illinois is $2,000.
It was not until the 80's that freedoms began running, not walking, down the slippery slope.
I've seen that many times with more than one little one not properly seated, and they have a pro-life bumper sticker on their car to boot!
I was waiting to see how long it would take for somebody to mention Britney and airbags in the same sentence...
Some laws are a good idea. And children safety seat laws are a dang good idea. As for bikes, you are an adult you pays your money you take your chances.

It is NOT just California.
I see it down here around Houston also and on I-10. Kids jumping all around in the car - not even in seat belts, much less car seats - makes me want to scream at the parents - but my Spanish is limited.
There are reasons for that. Check out the DOT website. Kids need to be in special seat until they big enough. Period.

Yep, I raised two kids in the seventies and let them ride in the front seat and generally let them run wild in the car.
Now I'm raising a new baby and I just damn glad my previous STUPIDITY didn't result in one of them getting injured.
Only a fool does not restain their child in a car.
Just because we did things a certain way 30, 40 years ago, doesn't make it safe!---I personally know of a (young girl at the time) who went through the windshield and will carry the scars forever because a parents didn't care of she stood up while riding in a moving car)
And even though today's cars have airbags....
..just one slight fender bender....the air bag goes off.... and the baby Britney was so gaga to have.... is crushed!
Surely you can see that!
If someone was videotaped or photographed robbing a bank....would we give them a pass?
No....and neither should she get a pass for endangering her baby.
LOL! And some nice Freeper says the State should take the baby away from her over this "crime".
My son, before he could walk, had all baby safety equipment figured out. I was crusing down the highway one day with the radio blaring and look in my rear view mirror to see my baby standing on the bench seat holding onto his car seat, dancing and singing away.
From then on, I had to put him in the front seat so I could make sure he did not undo the car seat and get out.
Today, with airbags, I don't know what I would do! I'd be going to jail no matter what, I guess.
You have an argument for everything.
