My good friend has a 45 pound, 7 year old son in second grade. However, he won't "let" his wife put him in a car seat despite the 60 pounds recommendation. In his words "if the other boys at school see him in a car seat they're gonna beat his a$$."

That said, Britney is just stupid.

Stay strong with your refusal to let your son ride up front. A granny let a 10 year ride up front to see Christmas lights a few years ago - she hit a curb or something like that - airbags went off and almost decapitated the boy. He died. She has to live with that.

I think most conservatives have the ability to think. If the nanny state has insisted all vehicles have airbags, then children should be in the back seat. The airbag will kill this little one in a simple accident.

You didn't have the same quantity of drivers on the road, increasing chances of accidents.

There were not the same quantity or quality of roads, either. Two lanes and paved was a main highway most anywhere. So, while there may have been fewer drivers, there were fewer places for them to be driving, and divided highways were relatively rare.

Lots of other factors too. Cars back then had heavier sheet metal; less damage for the same impact.
Kid on a lap on private roads, I am fine with. Heck, I did it and was driving on logging roads at an early age, alone.
But in LA traffic?? SUV with airbag?
