Scranton withdraws from GOP primary BREAKING NEWS

By Brad Bumsted STATE CAPITOL REPORTER Tuesday, February 7, 2006

GOP gubernatorial candidate Bill Scranton today announced he is withdrawing from the Republican primary in May. His decision comes with Republican candidate and Pro Football Hall of Famer Lynn Swann poised to capture the GOP party endorsement for governor on Saturday.

That's like asking if Joe Torre could beat Michael Bloomberg to be Mayor of NYC. Swann will oust Rendell handily.

I hope so because Swann is a class act.

If Casey beats Rendell in the primaries, then I think Swann wins as governor. Casey is a colorless clone of his father, without the charisma of Rendell.

Yes, but Fast Eddie is a Philly Eagles fan and you know what losers they are! If he starts a mudslinging match with Swann, I know who has the most ammunition in that fight.

But the reality is that there is a lot of racism still left in the "T"...they may like Swann as a player, but damned if they are going to vote for him as a gov.

I live in the right top of the "T" and I don't see any racism to speak of. Of course, you can't see what's in people's hearts. There really is not much racial tension in PA -- in cities, suburbs or rural areas as compared to places like Cincinnati ( it was my misfortune to be in that city during a race riot several years ago). Second Amendment rights are one of the biggest issues in the "T" and if it's a choice between Rendell and Swann, they'll go for Swann on that issue alone.

I think his endorsement of Jim Matthews (Montgomery County) as his running mate for Lt. Gov. is pure genius! (Jim Matthews is Chris Matthews'( yes, the host of Hardball) brother.

what an ignorant statement. There is only one segment of the population that is guaranteed to vote 90% one way.

Does anyone actually know what his platform yet. More likely his platform is "Hey, I'm Lynn Swann baby!"

Sorry, but the truth hurts. Rural PA is as racist a part of the country as I've ever seen.

It will be Pittsburgh v. Philadelphia

No, it will be Pittsburgh and the rest of the state versus Philadelphia. Swann will easily get the Republican stronghold Central PA exurbs and rural areas. Rendell's machine can muster votes out of thin air in Philly, though. They had more votes cast there in the 2004 Presidential election than the census bureau claims live in the city.

Swann is very articulate and has done his homework on the issues. Scranton couldn't hold a candle to him, which is why he dropped out.

Rendell signed an extremely unpopular lawmakers' and judges' pay raise that they eventually had to roll back due to taxpayer outrage. People here are just chomping at the bit to kick all incumbents out right now. What is working against Santorum is working for Swann.

I believe one of those two gentlemen on the right will be the first black president of the U.S.

Just in case you all hadn't heard: Lynn Swann has a clear path to the endzone now.

Isn't Casey running for Senate against Santorum?

Yeah, I heard that earlier. Some good news, but let's just hope he keeps his eyes firmly focused on the goal line.

A little more good news for Lynn Swann in Pennsylvania. Rendell is having more difficulty than was expected. It's clear that Swann has great potential.
