Actions Speak Louder

Congressman Marty Meehan of Massachusetts is a career politician. And like other career politicians he is a big fan of memory holes. You know, as in George Orwell's "1984," wherein Big Brother put inconvenient facts down the memory hole, not to be spoken or read or remembered.

The Lowell Sun reports that Meehan's congressional staff, on taxpayer time, altered his biography on Wikipedia. That's the Internet website billed as the world's largest encyclopedia.

Gone down the memory hole went this entry: "Meehan first ran for Congress in 1992 on a platform of reform. As part of that platform Meehan made a pledge to not serve more than four terms, a central part of his campaign. This breaking of the pledge has been a controversial issue in the 5th Congressional District of Massachusetts."

Also deleted was the mere mention that Meehan had more money in his campaign account than any other House member. Could it be that this was deleted because it looked bad of a politician who'd made so much noise about campaign finance reform?

Marty Meehan was the clymer who called the President a coward for not flying directly into DC on Air Force One the morning of 9-11.

If the voters of Massachusetts do not seem to care about the fact that scumbags represent them in congress, why should anyone else? Massachusetts is Venezuela without oil.

Wikipedia listing is current.

"Controversies Meehan celebrates gaining enough votes to bring his campaign finance reform bill to the floor.Term limits. Meehan successfully ran for the House in 1992 on a platform of reform. As part of that platform Meehan made a pledge not to serve more than four terms. He won the 1992 election and was reelected to Congress every two years since, including the latest election in 2004. On the House floor in 1995 he scolded members who might go back on their promise to limit their tenure in office. "The best test of any politicians' credibility on term limits," he said, "is whether they are willing to put their careers where their mouths are and limit their own service." Despite this pledge, he again ran for Congress in the year 2000, exceeding four terms. [2] Wikipedia. On July 18, 2005, Meehan's staff made controversial changes to his biography on Wikipedia. These edits consisted of removing facts that portrayed him in a bad light.[3] On January 27, 2006, Matt Vogel, Meehan's chief of staff, admitted to authorizing a replacement article on Meehan published on Wikipedia, with a staff-written biography.[4] This ran afoul of internal Wikipedia guidelines.
