PHOENIX (AP) - U.S. Border Patrol agents were fired on by a suspected immigrant smuggler west of Yuma Tuesday night, officials said.
The gunfire came at the end of a 20-mile chase of a motorhome packed with illegal immigrants, U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman Michael Gramley said.
The incident began about 10 p.m. Tuesday when a citizen called in a tip about a large group of apparent immigrants who were seen getting in the motor home several miles west of Yuma. Agents tried to stop the motor home as it drove west on Interstate 8 near Andrade, Calif., but the driver wouldn't stop until the tires were flattened by a spike strip after about 20 miles.
As the vehicle stopped, the driver reportedly fired one shot from a pistol at the agents, striking the rear tail light of a Border Patrol vehicle. The driver and 22 illegal immigrants got out of the motor home and began running. All were captured.
The agents apparently didn't realize they had been fired upon until some of the immigrants warned them.
"As they began apprehending several people fleeing from the vehicle, several of them stated that someone in the vehicle had a gun and had fired a shot,' Gramley said.
The driver was a 26-year-old U.S. citizen from San Diego who wasn't identified. The Border Patrol turned him over to the FBI and will seek unspecified charges.
Just doing the human smuggling,LEO shooting XXXXXXXX wont do.
blam!
But they didn't shoot back?
I just thought that needed a little clarification.
Get a load of this...
Agents were unaware they had been shot at...
By a US Citizen? Who was turned over to the FBI. Burn, baby...
"Agents were unaware they had been shot at... "
no doubt on orders to be deaf, dumb, and blind!
And if the BP had shot and killed the punk in a gunfight, La Raza would be calling them nazis.
Coyotes don't give a damn!

The article says they didn't know they had been shot at. A .22 makes little noise, and the flash signature is no generally particularly visible in daylight. (Although more for a pistol than a rifle). The sound of a breaking tail light lens is going to be lost in the general road noise.
Not much experience being around folks shooting .22s outdoors? Add road noise, and dust to suppress what little signature a .22 has to being with, and I doubt you'd notice it either, in the middle of a road chase.
The .22's I have shot are pretty loud. Have to wear earmuffs when shooting .22 pistols. .22 rifles make a pretty good crack too.
Maybe they weren't paying attention or something. I really don't see how this could happen.
Assault with a deadly weapon on an LEO? Yeh, he should be away for some time.
Seriously, it's amazing that violence has been relatively low considering the ongoing Mexican Army drug-smuggling incursions, illegals throwing rocks at the BPs, coyotes driving like lunatics in the wrong lanes...
But still, cranking a round or two off in a motorhome you would sure think someone would have heard that! Well, maybe the sound of a dozen of so screaming illegals would cover it up...

Well, if the muzzle of the gun was inside the motorhome and the guy was shooting out of an open window, that would help muffle the sound. If standard velocity was used, like you say, those are quieter. And if a big truck or two were zooming by when the gun went off, it would help drown out the sound. Not impossible for all these situations to happen.
The casualties are low because the USBP has standing orders to run away and let these criminals do what they want.
