My point was that this Shi'ite custom seems strange, but you also may have customs that others see as just as strange. Don't judge or condemn an entire sect or religion based on a strange custom. There are many "strange customs" in the world. Slicing a baby's head open with a knife to commemorate a military defeat 1000 years ago is not a "strange custom," it's barbaric and cruel.
