Curfew was imposed Thursday in Leh town and the army staged a flag march following clashes between Muslims and Buddhists triggered by reports of alleged desecration of the Quran at a mosque in Kargil.

Thirty-one people have been arrested so far in connection with the clashes, Inspector General of Police (Kashmir Range) K Rajendra told PTI over phone from the Ladakhi capital.

Kumar said curfew has been imposed and the army and Indo-Tibetan Border Police were deployed as a precautionary measure.

A defence spokesman said the civil administration Thursday sought army assistance in maintaining law and order in Leh following which army was rushed immediately to conduct a flag march in the afternoon.

In Kargil town, two houses belonging to one Dr Mohammed Ramzan was torched and three vehicles damaged by angry mobs.

Divisional Commissioner (Kashmir) Basharat Ahmad Dhar who is camping in Leh said the situation was under control.

Clashes erupted between Muslims and Buddhists at Bodh Kharboo in Kargil area on Monday after some unidentified persons allegedly tore off pages of the holy book in a mosque there.

Civil administration officials accompanied by community elders went round the town and appealed to the people to maintain peace and amity.

While the story doesn't identify which group is doing what. I'll bet the angry mobs torching houses and damaging vehicles are not Buddhists. Although one of the houses belongs to a guy named Mohammed, maybe they were.

Muslims are at war with everyone...

...including themselves. A Sunni Muslim suicide-bomber killed Sh'iah Muslims in Pakistan today.

This is in Ladakh. Three of my children and three grandchildren as well as my wife were there last year. The Buddhists are incredibly nice, and peaceful. They spent a good deal of time in Leh.

I'm just as glad they aren't there now.

Someone in a mosque tore out pages from a Koran? A Buddhist in a mosque? Some how I sense a set-up here.

Leh, and nearly all of Ladakh is overwhelmingly Buddhist. There isn't any separatism problem there. Besides, the Indian Army presence there along the Indo-Tibet(China) border and the presence of numerous forward bases won't let trouble go for too long.

Kargil, where this incident took place, is a border town along the Pakistan-occupied part of Kashmir. It borders the Muslim parts of Kashmir, and is violence-prone. About seven years ago, a major military operation took place there to flush out Pakistani Muslim insurgents who sneaked into the border during the summer snow-melt season.

The incident mentioned in the article took place in Kargil. Now corellate the two maps and the religious composition of the areas. Ta-da?

Although Kargil seems pretty close to Leh, the capital of the Buddhist region of Kashmir, it is pretty rough terrain in between the two places (the highest peaks of the Himalayas(25000 ft+ high mountains pass right in between).

I think it was the Buddhists' fault -- these Buddhists are known for being violent people who spread their religion by the sword, with Buddha leading the armies and writing down that non-Buddhists should pay special taxes and be killed and treated as infidels. The Buddhists also destroyed temples etc. of non-Buddhists and killed millions of people. They also like to behead people and slit the throats of millions of goats, cows, camels etc. each year. They also call their nukes the Buddha bombs and regularly threaten the evil West and India and Israel..... /sarcasm

Kick the Mooselimbs out of Ladakh and Jammu. Kick them all to the land that was created for them -- Jinnah wanted all Hindus and others out of pakiland and all mosslimbs out of Hindustan, so let's fulfil his wishes.
