Rage over cartoons perplexes Denmark

COPENHAGEN — This diminutive nation with an offbeat sense of humor and a strong self-image of cultural tolerance is not accustomed to having its flag burned, embassies stormed and coat of arms pelted with eggs.

But Denmark has become a target for the Muslim world's outrage at cartoons lampooning the prophet Muhammad. ...Flemming Rose is not sleeping well these days. His cellphone glows with incoming calls. Cultural editor of Jyllands-Posten, Rose commissioned the caricatures. In an interview one recent night, Rose said he was trying to correct what he viewed as a troubling self-censorship in the media and arts over depictions of Islam. His decision to print the caricatures came after a Danish children's book author could not find an illustrator to draw Muhammad because Muslims believe any depiction of God or the prophets is sacrilege. ..."I think it's problematic when a religion tries to impose its taboos and rules on the larger society," he said. "When they ask me not to run those cartoons, they are not asking for my respect. They're asking for my submission…. To me, those cartoons are saying that some individuals have hijacked, kidnapped and taken hostage the religion of Islam to commit terrorism."

I think that the Mullahs messages in the mosques need to be translated into a language the West can understand.

Our enemy plainly states his intentions.

The rage merely reinforces the reason for the cartoon in the first place.

Yep, Muslims angry about being portrayed as violent respond with ......violence, of course. I wonder if they get the irony?

If Denmark has merely been "perplexed" by this, there isn't much hope left for it.

Having read the article, I'd conclude this is a crisis the Danes need.

"When they ask me [demand of me ]not to run those cartoons, they are not asking for my respect. They're asking for my submission….

I've come to a personal explanation and conclusion about this specific issue.
Obviously, I believe absolutely that, even among muslims, we can agree that the minority, regardless of the nature of the grievance, should never terrorize the minority. What is it then?

Simple: when you are incompetent, ignorant, and holding power, you must project that power; else you might be perceived as unnecessary, irrelevant, incompent and ignorant.
Hence the demands; hoping no one can notice that you are unnecessary, irrelevant, incompetent and ignorant.

Your comment is ill-informed. The Danes are and always have been stand-up folks.

They sent naval forces to Gulf I and ground forces to Iraq as part of W's coalition.

They are the only country in the world, other than the United States, to celebrate the 4th of July.

When the Germans invaded Denmark during World War II, the platoon of Danish troops at the border, armed with rifles and sidearms and faced with Panzers, accepted death rather than dishonor.

Alone among the peoples occupied by the Germans, the Danes saved the vast majority of their Jewish population first by hiding them and then by smuggling them to Sweden.

When the Danish King was told by the occupying forces that the next soldier to replace the Nazi flag with the Danish flag in the square in front of the palace would be shot, he replied that the next soldier to do so would be him.

Don't dis the Danes.

On the other hand ,he may be ppuzzled not so much by the original reaction which was moderate back in September 2005 at the time of the original publication, but by this latest drummed up outrage. It is all the more puzzling since the cartoons were published in the egyptian newspaper Al Fagr in October 2005,during "ramadan" no less withou much of a fuss even there.

"It's strange for us. Danes were always welcome in the Middle East, but now we're not. We've never seen this before. We've seen it with the U.S. and Israel, but not quiet little Denmark."

Worth repeating and pondering:

The Scorpion and the Frog

A scorpion and a frog meet on the bank of a stream and the
scorpion asks the frog to carry him across on its back. The
frog asks, "How do I know you won't sting me?" The scorpion
says, "Because if I do, I will die too."

The frog is satisfied, and they set out, but in midstream,
the scorpion stings the frog. The frog feels the onset of
paralysis and starts to sink, knowing they both will drown,
but has just enough time to gasp "Why?"

Replies the scorpion: "Its my nature..."

I guess I'd be perplexed too if I'd believed in my heart and soul that America is the oppressor in the world and that Muslims are merely among the oppressed, only to discover the Muslims are really fascists who don't give a fig for freedom of expression or any other Western value - unlike the U.S.
