Perhaps inspired by the discovery of new species in New Guinea, Katie Couric has made a discovery of her own: a new breed of terrorists that are "not as vicious."
She interviewed NBC reporter Richard Engel on this morning's Today show in the wake of the release of a new videotape of Jill Carroll, the US journalist kidnapped in Iraq last month. The tape showed a composed Carroll speaking with a floral backdrop behind her. Katie, ever the fashion maven, declared "it's actually kind of a pretty setting." Engel explained that the captors appear to be sending the message that they are looking to negotiate.
It could well be that for tactical reasons, the kidnappers might want to talk rather than kill at this time. But Couric took things a giant step further, interpreting their actions as reflecting that, deep down inside, these are killers with a warm 'n fuzzy side. She suggested to Engel:
"As far as you know, this particular splinter group is not as vicious as some of the others we've seen in the past."
Engel let Couric down easy. "Yes," he responded at first, but then let reality creep in:
"I don't think you can take too much comfort in that. Because she's still under their complete control and this group can change their opinions very quickly. Right now there's something of a vote going on on extremist websites where they're asking people, asking the followers whether they think Jill Carroll should be killed or whether she should be kept alive and unfortunately the majority of the people who are writing into these web sites said that they think she should be killed."
We'll cut Katie slack for wanting to hope for the best in this anguishing situation. But can Couric really believe that these terrorists, reportedly former members of Saddam's barbarous security services, wouldn't kill Carroll in a heartbeat if it suited their purposes?
Couric displayed the kind of naivete that can be lethal when dealing with terrorism.
In Katie's world, there are nice terrorists and bad terrorists.

This statement is so absolutely unbelievable, it's almost surreal. How anybody at all, even the crazies at DU, can possibly not see how despicable Katie Couric is, is beyond my comprehension.
If the NBC studios are ever hit by a terrorist attack, I certainly hope the suicide bombers are wearing coordinated outfits to satisy Katie's fashion sense before they blow her to smithereens.

Perhaps Katie can pick up some matching shoes while in 'Torino.'
Change "naivete" to stupidity, and you're on the right track. She's the sort of person who in an earlier time, would have said, "Oooohhh... Look at the pretty, fuzzy lion! I think I'll go pet him."
At least back then, those people were removed from the gene pool.

I've been having the same thoughts. Something just doesn't ring true about this.....
I can understand, to a degree, Ms. Carroll undergoing the Patty Hearst type identification with her captors (Stockholm Syndrome?), but Katie has no excuse for it. She's a disgrace. Thank you for reporting.
Sigh..I love the Olympics..but with Katie intervewing..it will be painful.
The stupidity of this woman never fails to astound me.
How she got to the position she is in, is well beyond my comprehension.
I am convinced many, many people tune in and raise the ratings, simply because they want to see what dumbass thing or remark this mentally challenged cheerleader bimbo will come up with next.
Both times I have watched her, she made me nauseous.
With Joycelyn Elders we had "safer guns and safer bullets". Katie continues the liberal tradition with "safer terrorists". What a dolt.
Maybe. But until there's proof, I just can't believe that anyone, even someone predisposed to sympathy with them, would cooperate with allowing themselves to be captured. That just doesn't pass the smell test for me. Anything is possible, of course, but I would have to see proof to take that position. But couldn't the Stockholm Syndrome be having an effect here? Especially for someone who is reportedly sympathetic anyway?
And not a word on the cartoon riots - wouldn't want to upset the NBC agenda.
If you ask me looking at her picture in the paper this morning shes either working with her captors or a victim of Stockholms syndrome at this point.
Only Couric could do a "puff piece" on terrorists.
You said some of what has been in the back of my mind. If this was for Allah - her head would already be off. It's starting to feel like this is for the other god - dollah.
I'm not sure I agree with Couric, but I saw pictures on TV of this woman Carroll smiling while wearing Islamic clothing. Can one be forced to smile, and look like they really are smiling?
