"Taxman Mitch"

In the 2004 elections, Republicans in Indiana were excited about their candidate for Governor, Mitch Daniels. As President Bush’s budget director, Daniels had made a name for himself in the Bush Administration and won acclaim from some in the news media, such as when Time Magazine named him their “Person of the Week.”

Daniels had moved from being a DC power-player to the Republican Party’s best hope to retake the Indiana Governor’s office from the Democrats, who had held the seat for 16 years.

Indiana Republicans affectionately referred to him as “My Man Mitch,” a nickname originally coined by President Bush.

On election night the Indiana GOP celebrated with elation as their man, Mitch, had pulled off a convincing victory that held potential to serve as a role model for Republicans across the nation.

But, now, it all seems like a dream, and many Republicans in the state are wondering what went wrong.

Today, “My Man Mitch” is known as the “Taxman Mitch” and other nicknames that rhyme with “Mitch” but aren’t appropriate for publishing.

It began with his first State of the State address when he shocked conservatives by proposing an income tax hike to help balance the state’s budget deficit. Daniels had also gone along with $1 billion in new spending in his proposed budget, which combined with the tax increase made a mockery of what it means to be a fiscal conservative.

Daniels had said during his campaign that tax increases would be left as a “last resort. Now it seems there isn’t a tax increase Mitch Daniels met that he didn’t like.

Working with Indianapolis’ Democrat Mayor, Bart Peterson, Daniels soon thereafter announced a deal to keep the Indianapolis Colts in Indiana for at least 30 years by building the team a new stadium.

And to pay for this deal, “Taxman Mitch” proposed, you guessed it, more tax increases.

There’s the increase in hotel taxes to 9% - on top of the state’s 6% sales tax. And on top of that there was the doubling of taxes on car rentals. Oh, and the doubling of food and beverage taxes. And finally, they increased the tax on tickets for those attending Colts’ games.

The Democrat mayor of Indianapolis and “Taxman Mitch” seem to enjoy their tax-raising relationship.

"We're like-minded about a lot of things," Daniels says of his relationship with the Democrat mayor, who returned the compliment by noting that the two had a lot in common in their governing styles.

But taxing income and restaurants and football games and hotels and rental cars wasn’t enough for “Taxman Mitch.”

Last month, Daniels proposed a 25-cent per-pack tax on cigarettes.

By pushing a constant stream of tax increases Daniels has sent the message that the problems with state and federal deficits isn’t that our politicians are spending too much, but that the public is being taxed too little.

With Republicans like this, who needs Democrats?

There have been other missteps by Mitch Daniels including his ill-spoken plea to find a way to get illegal immigrants to stay here legally. Apparently Daniels doesn’t understand the problem is allowing illegal aliens into this nation in the first place.

At some point Indiana Republicans are going to have to find a new leader for their party for the future.

Clearly Mitch Daniels finds himself at odds with the Republican principles of smaller government, lower taxes and greater liberty.

“Taxman Mitch” seems instead motivated by the insider politics game of wooing donors and polling voters to find out what issues his public speeches should address.

That’s not leadership, it’s merely self-promotion, and we have enough politicians who do that these days.

Indiana Republicans are now considering a “Ditch Mitch” campaign that runs a conservative Republican against “Taxman Mitch” in the 2008 Republican primaries.

They could start their search by taking a look at a rising star in the State Legislature, State Representative Eric Koch who serves as Assistant Majority Whip.

Koch is a champion of conservative ideals and an admirer of Congressman Mike Pence. Koch serves on the advisory council for the Boy Scouts of America and enjoys a strong following among 2nd Amendment supporters.

He strongly supports our troops and was the only state legislator who took the time out of his schedule to address the September 11th “Believe in Freedom” rally my organization, Move America Forward, conducted 2 years ago in Downtown Indianapolis to honor our troops and the victims of the 9/11 attacks.

Most significantly, Koch is a devout taxfighter who can paint a future for the Republican Party of Indiana that promotes responsible fiscal policies that doesn’t punish taxpayers for the over-spending habits of their elected officials.

"Ditch Mitch" is a growing movement among Indiana Republicans, and GOP leaders across the country better start paying attention.

Jackie Loughman, an Indiana Republican activist who I worked with on the Recall Gray Davis campaign that removed failed Democrat Governor Gray Davis from office in the middle of his 2nd term, said it best:

“These guys think they can keep sticking the taxpayer for their failures in office. You do that, and ask Gray Davis, you’ll be out of a job.”

It soon might be time for “Taxman Mitch” to start searching the classified ads for a new job.

For your discussion.

It's the big debate about the future of the GOP. What is the line between a Republican who makes some mistakes, and a Republican who advances policies that are an affront to the principles that the Republican Party is supposed to advance.

I obviously agree with the author of this column. If the GOP gives up the tax issue then they've given up the single most defining distinction between the two major parties.

I've grown tired of the big-spending Republicans in Congress (who look like the Democrats when they held the majority) and Republican Governors like Mitch Daniels and Arnold Schwarzenegger who seem more interested in getting along with their colleagues in the Democrat Party then they do in advancing conservative/Republican ideals.

Mitch is probably worse for us than anyone running against him would have been. At least the dims left the damned clocks alone.

Luckily, I saw through him and didn't waste my vote on him. This state would be in great shape if Gividen, the libertarian, would have won.

Democrats and Republicans are cut from the same statist cloth and are similarly worthless. Mitch proves this day in and day out.

He's a one termer for sure.

I'm disappointed with "My Man Mitch". He got my vote but he's not performing as I suspected. The toll road lease seems like very short term thinking to fund his road projects.

I agree with you, but look at what he was handed when he took the office also.
If he can start bringing back industry to this state and increase the tax base that way I will guarantee he will approach the problem different.
Right now that should be his #1 priority (as difficult as it is) and THEN start the major cuts needed. In truth the problem is a catch-22, he makes the cuts too deep now and he hurts the states chances for growth by attracting industry back here. I will give him another year, 18 months to see where we are before I start really coming down on him.

Well, you are wiser than me. My friends in Indiana didn't think he was the greatest but they WERE very excited that his campaign was surging and he was going to take the Gov's office for the GOP.

But it just seems like he's performed worse than even his critics might have suggested. I just don't get it. He's been quite a let down to me at least.

Not to mention higher real Estate taxes (ours went up 50% last year alone), getting us on daylight savings time (which nobody wanted) and now wanting to lease the Toll Road in Northern Indiana to a European Country for the next 75 years(also against the residents of Indiana's wishes)....yeah....he won't be back.

And his time zone agenda turned into as much of a cluster fudge as we currently have. No improvments there.

I think your opinion of the ex-Governor is dead on. Let's hope the Republicans can come up with someone better for 2008 so the state doesn't go back to the DIM column for another 16 years.

I'll leave the toll-road issue to you Hoosiers to discuss. You all seem to get so heated about it. I can understand why, but I don't know the best outcome so I'll shut up and watch you guys resolve it.

He's an authoritarian. As long as Republicans allow candidates like him to ruin their party, you will keep discovering the candy is filled with dog poop as soon as you bite into it. It's too late for Indiana, though. We have a whole box of it to eat now.

I not a huge fan of Daniels but look what he inherited from 16 yrs of Evvie and FrankO:
they got the lottery money, the casino money, raised the income tax, the property tax, the sales tax,
AND STILL RAN THE STATE INTO A BIG BUDGET DEFICIT

What I wonder is if there would have been much difference if Joe Kernen was Governor? Hard to speculate about what he would have done, but I suspect it wouldn't be that different.

I regret voting for Mitch.
I use the toll road several times a week. And he says the rate won't go up? Right.
And don't get me started on the time zone thing.

I hate my govenor.
I wish Kernan was still govenor.

It would be as it was before. Which is much better than what Daniels has done.

If left to his own devices, Mitch would do more damage in 4 years than the dims did in 16. He needs to be recalled. Can we do that here? I'm not sure.
