CALGARY -- The cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad that sparked riots worldwide angered Calgary Muslims yesterday after the caricatures were published in a city paper.
The Jewish Free Press -- an independent paper -- reprinted three of the cartoons in its Thursday edition alongside paintings of the prophet found in books and museums. The paper also printed anti-Semitic cartoons.
Abdu Souraya, a Calgary Muslim, said Islam promotes freedom of expression, but journalists need to use discretion.
Editor Richard Bronstein said it was his duty to let readers inform themselves about the issue.
Ezra Levant, publisher of the Western Standard, said he will also print the cartoons on Monday in the context of a news story.
"How can you tell the story without showing the cartoons?" he asked.
"Why has every editor in Canada not published this? Are they really worried about (offending people)?" Levant asked.
Good for them!
Heh.
I was speaking to someone in the know yesterday, and I told them that the Western Standard would be the first major Canadian publication to put out those cartoons.
I think freedom of expression in Islam is a relative thing. They promote more freedom than, say, the 6th century pagan tribes they conquered. "Take that, ignorant idol worshippers! Allah-la-la-la-lu Ahkbarrrr!"

Not all canucks are wimps.
I knew that...
They're worried that an Islamic nutter might just open a phone book and look up their address.
.....said it was his duty to let readers inform themselves about the issue
It is to hoped that the adage which says- If we do not hang together, we will hang apart, does not prove out here. It is a real test for the newspaper.
Somewhere in the dim recesses of my my mind, I recall a case of newspaper history.
John Peter Zenger.
In 1734, Zenger was arrested in New York State. He spent eight months in jail, awaiting trial. He was the publisher of the Journal. He had heavily critized and lampooned Governor Cosby. The charge was "seditious libel".
Alexander Hamilton defended him and he was acquited by 12 jurors. All were under duress. It was written many years later that: "This was the germ of American Freedom, the morning star of that liberty..... which revolutionized America.
I would love to ask Wolf Blitzer and his colleagues, if they ever took Journalism 101. LOL
Acquitted (two t's).
criticized (with a c added).
I wonder why they printed only three of the cartoons? If the point is that you can't tell the story about Muslims worldwide rioting over 12 cartoons that they find offensive, why publish only three cartoons?
If the point is that you can't tell the story about Muslims worldwide rioting over 12 cartoons that they find offensive without actually showing the cartoons, then why publish only three cartoons?
