Ann Coulter Speaks, Crowd Erupts
Human Events ^ | 02/10/06 | Ivy J. Sellers

Ann Coulter...was definitely Friday’s biggest draw at CPAC 2006.

From the get-go the conservative columnist had the crowd cheering and was frequently interrupted by applause.

Many of Coulter’s talking points came from recent news events -- such as “the great Danish cartoon caper” and President Bush’s Supreme Court nominees.

“Muslims are the only group who kill because people call them violent,” she said of Islam’s rage over the printing of Muhammad cartoons.

Speaking about the nation's highest court, Coulter not only expressed elation at Justice Samuel Alito’s confirmation, she also shared her feelings on Chief Justice John Roberts ...

She had fun impersonating Sen. Hillary Clinton, mocking Clinton’s MLK Day remarks on “the slave plantation” in the House of Representatives, adding: “And you know what I’m talkin’ about, girlfriend.”

“I can say that by the way,” Coulter said. “My party freed the slaves.”

Democrats have three major planks, she explained: “Abortion on demand, gay marriage and banning the Boy Scouts.

Someday they’ll find a way to combine them all and figure out how to abort all future Boy Scouts.”

Muslims are the only group who kill because people call them violent

One of the most outstanding lines of 2006.

"'Maybe Roberts will contravene the sordid history of 'stealth nominees' and be the Scalia or Thomas that Bush promised us when he was asking for our votes. Or maybe he won't. The Supreme Court shouldn't be a game of Russian roulette.' Ann Coulter

It was fair commentary when she made it."

It's still fair commentary. There's a big ruling brewing on abortion, too, that will settle the issue. I'm hoping for the best, but it's never a dull moment with the GOP SCOTUS nominees.

Did she finally admit she was wrong about Roberts?

Nope. Harriet Miers.

She came out hard against Roberts too.

"Can't imagine having to sit through one of her cheerleader sessions."

True as that is, and as much as I'm not a Coulter fanatic OR a Bushbot, it is nice to have someone on the national media scene that is a conservative cheerleader. She is perfect for those purposes because she is usually on message for conservatives during the time allotted, not simply the GOP. Can you name another who gets as much regular exposure and can handle a Carville? Maybe Michelle Malkin--but she's not as good on TV, either, because she is less aggressive.

She opposed Roberts on the premise that there were more qualified and known candidates available.

No, her opposition was much more stinging than that. She wrote an article titled, "SOUTER IN ROBERTS' CLOTHING".

It was fair commentary when she made it.

No it wasn't, it was a pure hit piece. The last sentence you quoted was the only one that cast she had any doubt that Roberts might not be a Souter. Coulter was 100% against Roberts.

"No, her opposition was much more stinging than that. She wrote an article titled, 'SOUTER IN ROBERTS' CLOTHING'."

Evoking scrutiny is good. If you read between her lines, Roberts' conservate bonfifides were still largely unknown; may still be....

But Ann gave notice to conservatives to keep their eyes WIDE open (and that helped avoid the Harriet Miers debacle eventually, didn't it?)

Btw, do you believe in, "just trust me"?

"Those of you who were ridiculing her looks, her single status, her education were engaged in the same kind of character assassination that is a Coulter trademark."

Miers lost because she wasn't a proven conservative and the base doesn't take kindly to y'all smacking us then and lying about us now, either. The lies are desperate spin from you, who hate us because you didn't get another RINO on the court and you fear a strong, CONSERVATIVE GOP. We're just not letting you rewrite history any more, because we were there and remember your mudslinging. If you think that's gloating, then you really ought to get beat more often so you can see what it's like. Go challenge Michael Jordan to a game of one-on-one. Or just say what you really believe during the next GOP primary.

It was a fair hit piece, too. He's not proven yet by any means. I hope Roberts is great--but we shouldn't have to hope.

In Coulter's article on Roberts ( SOUTER IN ROBERTS' CLOTHING), Coulter did the following:

Coulter said,  "Bush decided to disappoint all the groups"

She called Roberts a  "blank slate"

Ann compared Roberts credentials to those of  "Larry Flynt's attorney"

Ann said, "Stealth nominees have never turned out to be a pleasant surprise for conservatives. Never. Not ever."

Ann made an analogy of Roberts to Johnnie Cochran.

Ann said compared calling Roberts a conservative the equivalent of calling Souter a reliable conservative.

Ann equated Roberts to a "welfare queen".

Ann called Roberts nomination a "Rorschach blot"

I thought Ann was dead wrong when she made those attacks, and even believe more so today.  Roberts will prove to be a very good conservative justice in the mold of the man he replaced. One day very soon, Ann will have egg on her face for that article. It is getting very close to that day.

Not at all. But Roberts had a solid 30-year history of choosing to support men like Reagan, Bush, and Rehnquist. Roberts worked almost exclusively on conservative causes. The couple of instances where Roberts helped out on other cases that were not conservative was in cases where Roberts was doing a favor for a collegue. Coulter shot from the hip against Roberts and missed the target completely.

I know that Ann is a speaker for the news of the moment, but I wonder what would happen if someone made a tape or CD or DVD of pieces of her speeches? How many would she sell? I think lots. It would be inspiring for people to listen to on their way to work or on trips.

Anyone got the ability to make this happen???

"Ann said, 'Stealth nominees have never turned out to be a pleasant surprise for conservatives. Never. Not ever.'"

Is she right historically speaking?

And the verdict isn't in yet, is it?

Condider Miss Coulter a vigilant watchdog....

I mean if we can't trust Dubya to enforce the border and note his pro-amnesty stance, his judgement IS suspect.

I hope Roberts is great--but we shouldn't have to hope.

I made a freeper bet with someone at the time about Roberts voting with Scalia and Thomas. It is a bit earlier to tell, but right now I well on my way to winning it. Of course, there haven't been too many controversial rulings yet.

The "just trust me" comment was made in reference to Harriet Miers. NOT Roberts.

OK. You don't like AC. I do. We just have different tastes. I can live with that.

However, it was a cheap shot blaming her for getting a pie thrown in her face.

And I'll concede the SCOTUS nominees. Only time will tell how they actually vote and if either of them are another Thomas or Scalia or not.

Not the total verdict. But Roberts has been more than solid so far. But we will wait for some of the more hot button cases to hit the court.
